Has anyone start to catch any herring or greenling around Cates Park or Belcarra?

size 6 hook with mussle or if you want to fly fish for them just tie a piece of shiney aluminum foil on a size 14 hook use fast sink line. tiresome though. but fun the first time I tried. Oh and you might also get greenlings and pile perch.

Everytime I've been at Cates or Balcarra fishing off the docks, I've caught at least 5 using a herring jig.  Numbers are probably closer to 7-8 for average.

I was jigging for herring up in Rupert when I hooked a 4-5 lbs dolly.

We would jig for the herring on our lunch and coffee breaks when I worked at the old BC Packers (Atlin) plant up there. We would store them in a 5 gal bucket and take the boat out after work and mooch for springs.

You certainly can cast herring jigs, at least that's how we fished for them years ago. Simply cast out, slowly reel in the jig, lift the rod once awhile. If you get a fish on, don't speed up the retrieve. Maintain the same retrieving speed because you have a good chance of hooking more fish in the same retrieve.

You can use a Herring rake as well to catch them, but you need a boat.

Thank you

You can locate them near kelp beds, small islands that come out in low tide or just under water during high tide, they surface and bubble, and watch for gulls flying around.
