hi, is there a place close to richmond to catch mud sharks??

I dont really know-- except that they can be as common as sculpins ( especially when you dont want them)  But that said, they really do provide good sport on light line. And according to thousands of Asians and Europeans-- great eating too- if prepared properly.

Spanish Banks can be loaded with them-- so I see no reason why you cant get them off Richmond, if you stay away from the heavy fresh water influence.... Anyone else with more info???

are mud sharks the same as dogfish?

if so, any bait on a sandy bottom should do it.

they are migratory so they might not be here year round.

I like to fish for mud sharks at ambelside park, west vancover in the summer time. Shinner perch work well for bait and i use a steel leader with a good sized hook (7/0, 6/0,5/0). A 2 - 4oz  wieght will do the trick. Prime time for mud sharks is from around 8:00PM - 12:00PM.

I used to love going to  ambleside! Some times a bunch of us would stay till 2-3 in the mornin! Putting  Glow sticks on the rod tips help also!

Haha yah, I think the latest i ever stayed was until 1 AM or something like that

My Dad always said to skin them right away because they have a high ammonia content in their skin and it will go into the meat shortly after dead. He once brought home some and told us it was cod. Mom deep fried it tasted great until after we ate it he told us it was dogfish. It was just the thought of it that turned me off. Those green eyes that sandpaper skin. Be careful my dad had the tip of his finger bitten off by one. Also watch for the spikes underneath they try to sting you with. He says a lot of fish and chip places who sell "deep fried fish" often use dogfish instead of cod or halibut.

Ambleside also provides descent bottom fishing for flatfish. the occasional rock cod is pulled out of there too.
