Chilliwack River October 19th, 2007
« on: October 19, 2007, 02:41:13 PM »

It was a gamble this morning. I sat here at 4:30am looking over the hydrograph, comparing the height with the previous dates and finally convinced myself to give it a shot. I didn't want to be here and then read Chris' message, "You should have been there, the water was perfect." afterward. :-\ The drive out in the downpour almost made me turn around, but I was convinced that I could get at least couple of hours in before the river completely coloured. I was right. :)

The first two hours after first light was very good in mid river. Visibility hovered around 2 to 3 feet most of the time before it finally coloured up completely at 10:00am. Once it got light enough, coho salmon began rolling around me. It was only a matter of time before the float went for a dive. The first hook-up was around 1 hour after first light. A very fresh hatchery doe around 8lb came in and I made sure it stayed in by diving on top of it on the bank. ::) After that, I proceeded to miss numerous bites. It seems that the fish are taking it very lightly this year. With two more hook-ups and losses (one on roe and one on spoon), the clarity finally degraded to the point that I didn't feel like fishing it anymore. I packed it in and settled with one fish. It was a short yet sweet outing.

Too bad the river will not be fishable for awhile, because there seemed to be a new bump of fish in the river. Perhaps some of the northern tributaries in the Fraser will produce for all the weekend warriors. Good luck. :)

I knew that there would more fish coming in after the river got a hole poked in it the last few days. I came close to driving out and fishing for at least a few hours but decided not to take the risk. I've been working at home and keeping an eye on this site in case someone posted a report and I'm really happy that one is up. Other than the river being out of shape all sounds great. Hey Rod, I was noticing my float taking slow dips the last few days but didn't hit .. Oh no.... Am I missing fish?? I guess I should be hitting everything. Damn, I hate it when the obvious presents itself so clearly....  :P

I'll second Rodney's report with the water clarity- degrading is the best description.  All in all, a decent morning too.  Was there first light in the lower and had some success with blades.  If you like rain, then this is or was also a day not to be sitting at home.  Missed a couple of light taps and then out of the blue, BANG...Nice wild coho of about 4 lbs to hand, the 1st of the season.  Off she went, not too big but certainly a spirited fight.  The morning continued on and the small stick in the water indicated that the river was rising very slight.  Good thing to keep an eye on when BANG again, another one - bigger  ;D, Back and forth, jump, roll, jump, drag ripping off - man I love coho.  Bright silver wild male with a forming hook about 7-8 lbs.  Gammie comes out and like that, its off on its way to complete its journey.

Loved today, good fishing and fewer people out in the elements.  Made the drive out from Burnaby certainly worthwhile.  Hoping the taps turn off to see if I can get a couple more shots at them.

Cheers and if you head out on the weekend, wade safe.

Yep. ;) I heard you and CG went to Cookies Grill without me before that. :'( ;D Anything else down there after I left?

They could be, hard to say without seeing them in person. Today I was fishing really close to the bank. At one point I had the float drifting slowly directly under my float and the line was quite tight between the rod tip and float. It went for a quick dip and I even felt a tap on the rod. Before I could react, it was long gone.
