idiots guide to removing rod guides?
« on: November 13, 2007, 07:58:35 PM »

So I need to send in my rod and the rod company says I needs to send the rod in (top) with guides removed for blank replacement.

Is there a simple very basic tool way to remove the guides without damaging the blank any more?

There are about 7 guides including tip top.

Instructions designed as simple as possible would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Dennis!

I've been building rods for a long time.   The easiest way to remove guides without damaging the blank is to:

          1) Use a razor blade/knife and cut away the epoxy and thread on TOP of the foot of the guide
          2) Hold the blade parallel to the guide foot and cut toward the eye of the guide
          3) Peel away the epoxy coat and thread
          4) When you find the end of the thread keep pulling and unravel the rest
          5) The rod tip can usually be removed by using a lighter to heat the metal tube of the tip
          6) Use pliers to pull off the tip

Let me know if you have any problems.
