Hey everyone,

  I had an absolutely great day on the frozen pond today. got to the lake around  9am and things started out slow, for an hour and a half nothing. around ten thirty- eleven got into a couple of fish around 12-14 inches using red worms and a yellow marabou jig with flash. I decided to switch it to a white marabou jig with flash and cooked shrimp. it was after that the flood gates opened and i was into a fish every  10 minutes or so for two and a half hours. I drilled twelve holes in 6 to 15 ft of water so after i would get one fish i would move to the next. got my biggest rainbow of the year today at  whopping twenty-six inches  . it was a bit of a struggle to get him out through the hole, most fish were in the 15-18 inch range. the two i took home were 26 and 22 inches respectively . havent done a batch of rainbow trout in the smoker so these will be my test subjects. if ice fishing a lake with good size fish in it i would suggest using braided line. i would have lost my larger fish today without it. by far my best day of trout fishing this year for fish of size. got into about a dozen fish, all rainbows (was hoping for some brookies today) not bad for my first ice fishing expedition of the year. ive got pics but my cord for my camera is at home in whistler. sorry for not giving up my spot but this is more of a report for anyone wondering whether the ice fishing season has begun, it has in a very good way. 

  Ice was plenty thick where i was (10-12 inches) but make sure you check if you are in mountains in the lower mainland.

I look forward to getting out ice fishing soon around the 'loops too...had some decent times on Edith...

However, if you get out on the ice, you should keep in mind that the SAME RULES apply as during open water season.

26 inches = 66.04 cm
22 inches = 55.8

Both well over...If you caught them both, you were required to release the second one.

Not trying to be harsh, but trying to keep it good for everyone.

Put it this way...if the rules stated that you were allowed 2 over 50, at least one of those probably wouldn't have been there for you to catch.
Fat 18 or 19 inchers are usually the best eating anyway.

 That is totally my bad, completely agree with you. Not sure why I didnt check the regs before lake fishing. No excuses, Im pretty embarrassed.

Still...it was good that you only kept the two.  I'm glad to hear you released a bunch because many do not because there's no one looking over their shoulder, especially on those bitter cold days when no one in their right mind should be out there.

I see more .... and hear more about ice fisherman breaking the rules more than any other type of angler.  If you think DFO are sparse during the open water season on lakes, winter is ten times worse!  Unless they take out snow mobiles very few lakes get checked, especially if you're off the beaten track even the tiniest bit.

There are people who live on the lake year round where our cabin is and they are constantly phoning the police and DFO during the winter months to check out people who are taking out truck loads of fish.  They never show up...always using some flimsy excuse and this lake is accessible by road!   I have a friend who goes out in his small aircraft several times every winter and he sees ice fisherman on tons of lakes that have winter closures....lakes that I can't wait to fish in the spring starting May 1st.   

I've got alot of faith in the guys on this website because I believe they play by the rules so while you're out there... keep the "bad" ones on the straight and narrow.
