~~~Cigar Storage~~~
« on: February 01, 2008, 06:42:52 PM »
Hey guys,
 I just had a guy lay some fine Cuban Cohiba cigars on me and I don't have a "humidor" so is there a "poor mans" way of storing these bad boys? I know many of you are cigar connoisseurs and might know a few tricks. I just finished my first one out on my patio and man do they take a loooong time to puff one down.
For the absolute ghetto, el cheapo storage, use a big ziploc bag and put all your cigars in there.  Then get a smaller ziploc bag, like a sandwich bag, a small sponge, add a small amount of distilled water and CAREFULLY place the small bag inside  the big one wilth the top open so as not to spill it and seal the big bag.  DO NOT SOAK your sponge.  Just enough to get it damp and there should be no water collecting in the bottom of the bag.  Once sealed, you can hang the bag by making a small hole in the lip (don't puncture the seal) and hang it from a hook.  Works really well and it's cheap.
From what I gathered from a friend of mine that belongs to a cigar club you only freeze them for a couple of days after you buy them direct from the factory. This will kill any worms in the cigar tobacco.
I've heard of people getting tapeworm from those cigars :-\ Something to do with all that spit making them and baby tapeworms in the mouth of the of the guy rolling them.
A couple of things:
When cigars are made, they're presssed together and the combination of the oils and the moisture from the tobacco leaves inside the binder holds the whole thing together. After the wrapper is rolled on, they use a natural glue called gum of tragacanth to finish the cap of the cigar.  No licking involved.
When they're being ready for export, they're put into a vaccuum chamber that has all the air sucked out of it to kill any beetle eggs.  MOST manufacturerer do this.
So, if you buy your cigars from your hotel waiter in Cuba, you get what you pay for, including possibly saliva and tobacoo beetles.
