Hi Everybody,

Just wanted to let everyone know that The Tynehead Hatchery in Surrey, will be having a salmon send off and open house this Sunday May 4th.

"Open House & Tours of Hatchery - Sunday, May 4, 2008, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m."

Kids will have the opportunity to release juvenile salmon into the Serpentine River, there will be draw prizes, a barbecue, and two trout ponds for the kiddies to try their luck!!! For those of you who have never had the chance to get down there and check out what this hard working team of volunteers has accomplished, now's your chance

If you live in the Surrey area or feel like coming down to support the cause and have a some fun, everyone is welcome!

I attended the Fanny Bay Enhancement Soc. open house today. They also had the kids doing a fry release. Lots of informative displays from other Streamkeepr/Enhancement groups from north-central Island too.

The dedication of these guys and gals is awesome.

In the past couple of years the open house, and fry release has attracted 150-200 attendees at best, and this year there well over 1000 people in attendance. What a top notch event! They opened at 11am, and by 10:50am there was already a line up at the gate. They actually ran out of fry to release!!! Numerous dignitaries came out to show support including Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts, and representatives from Pacific Salmon Foundation and a few other organizations....and best of all they came with donations!! Not 100% sure on the exact numbers but there was enough $$$ donated excluding public donations and raffle draw etc. to take care of the new roof they are in need of and maybe even a few upgrades. It's sure nice to see that projects such as these seem to be gaining steam! Once again hats off to all the hard working individuals that keep hatcheries like this in operation. From what I heard as I wandered around, they might even have a few new volunteer recruits on their hands! Kudos on a job well done

Thanks for the update Arnie. If people still want to make a donation, how can they go about it? What species of salmonids are raised at the hatchery and how many juveniles are released each year?

The Fingerling Festival also took place last weekend in Port Moody, where kids were able to release chum fry into Noons Creek.

Hi Rodney,

The hatchery is run by the Serpentine Enhancement Society, and the easiest way to make a donation is through the website. Just click on the "Donate" button in the left hand column. The hatchery raises; Chinook, Coho, Chum, and Steelhead, with most of the juveniles going into the Serpentine River and a lesser amount dispersed to other lower mainland hatcheries for release. Not 100% sure of the exact number of juveniles released annually(I'll find out for you), but to give you some scope, I believe it over 65,000 were released on Sunday. I'll double check all the details and follow up. Also to follow up on the $$$ raised on Sunday.... it was in excess of $36,000.

Any idea what type of turnout the other salmon release events typically get? It is sure nice to see so much community involvement!

Do you have a tally of the returns of all species you have had since you started your hatchery?

I checked on your web site but could not find them but maybe I missed seeing them.

Hi Chris,

By the way thanks for the words of encouragement on the first post about this! To answer your question I should first clarify that I don't actually work for the hatchery, however my Grandfather who at 84 years old volunteers full time - 5 days a week at the Tynehead Hatchery, keeps me well informed. Just trying to get involved and assist them in getting the word out. Slowly but surely I'm getting the details together You are right in that the website does not contain that info, and I've made a suggestion that they include a bit more detail about this as well. I do know that last year(2007), they had a return of about 3000 fish; 1500 of which were coho and the balance of which were chum and chinook. To follow up on Rodney's question, they release roughly 300,000 juveniles annually. Last year they also sent about 90,000 coho eggs to Inch Creek Hatchery, and about 30,000 chinook eggs to the Nicomekl hatchery.

Thanks very much for the information and nice work by all the volunteers on getting that many fish back in 2007, very encouraging I am sure for all involved.

It is too bad our wild stocks are decreasing every year and streams have to be augmented by hatchery stock but it appears to be a sign of the times. Without this being done I believe many systems would be void of any fish. Of course these fish are very important to the well being of the streams as well as other animals that rely on these salmon right from the fry stage to when they return as adults.

Please past our thanks on to your grandfather and the others for their dedication to the Tynehead Hatchery, I must stop in there one day.
