Effective 00:01 hours Thursday May 15, 2008 until further notice the daily quota for sockeye salmon in Area 23, Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet, will be zero (0).

The pre-season forecast for Somass Sockeye is 150,000.  At this runsize there is no available recreational catch. Meetings have been held with the South Coast SFAB and the local Port Alberni SFAC. Discussions focused on the pre-season forecast and recreational sockeye opportunities in Area 23.

The Somass Sockeye inseason stock assessment program will be in place in 2008. This program collects escapement, test fishing, catch and environmental information on a weekly basis. This information is then used to prepare a weekly inseason run size reforecast.

While at this time a recreational sockeye fishery in Area 23 Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet is not anticipated, the weekly inseason run size will be closely monitored. If the inseason run size reforecast indicates a substantially larger return than the pre-season forecast fisheries may be possible.  The first inseason run size reforecast is scheduled for the first week of July.
