Fish At Bamfield, mid June 2008
« on: June 21, 2008, 04:18:10 AM »

My cousin was out Bamfield way last week and was able to find some action with some chinooks to 17 pounds working out of Poets Nook. I have stayed there a couple of times, sure a nice spot, the only part I donot like is the drive on the road out there. Nearly beat the poor old Leaf Craft and Leaf Mobile to death on that stretch of highway. I wonder if they will ever pave it.

My cousin also said they redid the wharfs at the Nook, a nice destination for a Summer holiday if you are into ocean fishing although I donot believe there will be a  sockeye fishery in the inlet this season which usually is the big draw with the facility at China Creek filled to capacity.

I stayed there a couple of times and took a tyee that hit the scales at a even 50 pound. took him mooching a plug cut herring by the mouth of Franklin River. Also, believe it or not I took 2 sockeye on the same bait.

Also caught a chum mooching a 6 inch herring and that was at Kelp Bay, I was not sure what species it was for a while as I had never seen one in its ocean condition, only in their river spawning colours.

Wish i could have been around when those franklin fish were there. They had good genes and were huge but now that areas closed as the run plummeted. :-\ Inside is hit and miss from reports but offshores getting better i heard

And don't forget about those HUGE fish that used to return to the Nahmint Kelly! 80 pounders weren't all that uncommon... before the seine fleet literally wiped them out that is :(

Barkely has been heating up as of late, as more bait continues to enter and stick inside. Cree/Austin, Swale, Vernon, Effingham and Diplock have all produced reasonably well over the past week and change.

Outside is getting HOT! Tried for a shot at hali's yest, but the weather said otherwise. So stuck close to Ukee, and fished the Southbank. Landed 15 springs in a brief but intense 2 hour fishery. Largest was 25, smallest just better than 10. Heard the hali's were thick & Hungry out on the Shallow Spot this am (of course the weather tamed down, I'm off the pond today :P).
Springs are quite abundant out on the Big Bank as well, but the mature fish appear to be starting to follow the pattern they established last year, and run towards home waters tight to the beach. Sweet with the fuel prices the way they are!! Southbank, Lighthouse Bank, Mara, Sou'west Corner and the beach tacks have all been showing well of late.

I've now switched hats from commercial trolling over to sport guiding again. Will be working out of Uklee for the season of course. Most of the Dance Card is already full, but if you're interested in getting out with this ol Salty Dawg, give my buddy Paul a shout and tell him Matt sent you along. He may be able to sneak you in for some Fun!

Regardless of how you get there, it is indeed time to be thinking of offshore action. The season is looking to be yet another Hot one!! Hope to see a few of you out there enjoying the bounty and excitement the Mistress Pacific has to offer!! ;D

I am flying out to the west coast of the island to one of the lodges on saturday for 4 days of guided fishing and I am sure glad to hear that the fishing is starting to get good. We have 2 days of Halibut and chinook and 2 days of  salmon. On our last day of fishing the coho open so I hope to get a few.

Oops thats what i meant nog i have no idea about the fanklin fish but oldtimers told me about those nahmint hogs! The sarita also has some good genes. We did seines for the hatch there and the average spring was alot bigger(25+) that the nitnat(20). Heard rumours of sockeye opening today also? Maybe its true even with the small run

Doubtful at this point Kelly. There's just over 50K through the counters at this point I believe, which is a pretty good showing what with this year's extremely low run forecast. But until there's significantly more in the system, it stays shut down. As it should be IMHO. Only thing I can add to that is EVERYONE should be shut down in an effort to help the resource. ;)

On the WC front, pilchards have shown up on the banks again in decent numbers! With the low abundance of herring (seems they were mined almost to death!) it is great to have some real bait move in for the predators to concentrate on! Think 6" spoons, and 6 / 7 inch Tomics in the right pattern to imitate the prey, and you should shortly have a whole word of FUN to deal with!! ;D

Back offshore anon, will check in and report from time to time as able...

Cheers,
