How do I fish for salmon in the ocean?
« on: July 16, 2008, 05:47:47 PM »

If you have been successful, what do I need?  How do I need to set up my gear?  Do you have specific advice as to what gear works?

using downrigger

green white hootchi or plain white hootchi 6' leader to a 11"green stripe uv type flasher.
or
same flasher 6' leader to anchove in chartruse teaser head.
maybe
flasher on the cannon ball, back 10'. with cutplug 5' above, 15'-20' back.

remember: long leaders for chinook 6'-8', slow and lazy and they like the colour green.
short leaders for coho 30"- 60" speed up a little, they like armytruck hootchi's with red stripe flashers

center rod or no downrigger

4-6oz bananna wieght 10' leader to cut plug herring 75pulls out to start, up to 150pulls out if there are no seals around to steal your fish.

mooching with cutplug (i call it mooching, but i think real mooching is with live herring)
drift with current 4oz bannana wieght. it just fluters around. i do this with cartoper at the mouth of the Cap. under the bridge let the out going tide push you out or in with incoming tide. watch for wind in the cartoper, it comes up fast.

Good info but i would never use a 6 ft leader with a hootchie it would have no action. 40inch for springs with full size hootchies and 34 for squirts. 12 inches shorter for coho they like more action. Cop car coyote spoon is also good as you dont need to know how to get a good roll like anchovie and it doesnt get damaged like an anchovie. use 5-6ft leaders behind mini or full size flasher. Ushually troll around 1.5-2kts

If you dont have a boat you can fish from shore.All you need is a ten and a half foot rod bait caster or spinning gear waders.We throw home made spinners each guy has his own combo allso buzz bombs and zingers are popular as is flatfish.The place to do this is West Vancouver Ambleside There geting the odd one of the breakwater all in all its pretty slow right now. ;D
