Langara Island August 7-10
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:08:58 PM »

Just got back from Langara Island. We had heard that this year had been one of the worst for salmon fishing there in recent memory, so were as bit concerned how it might turn out.
Salmon fishing started off pretty slow, with no fish landed the first afternoon, and only two the following morning.  ???

Seas were quite calm so we went on some bottom fishing outings and did pretty well on a mixed bag of halibut, ling cod and yellow eye. Several large halibut over 100 pounds were caught right near us, but we just got chickens. It was interesting to watch the harpoon come out and get used on 100 pound plus fish. We still managed to fill the fish box though. Here's some pictures:

Gwoman with typical chicken halibut.

Yelloweye:

Ling cod:

Hog tied 104 pounder caught by some others we met. It was not the biggest caught by our group of boats that afternoon.

Towards the end the salmon fishing picked up and we did pretty well there too. We caught a number of springs with the bigger ones into the high 20s, along with some 10-13 pound coho. As usual, the ones that got away were much bigger..... :-\

I think we were fortunate as I understand our trip was one of the better ones up there this year so far. All in all we had pretty good fishing and a great time up there. :)

Glad you got into some fish in the end.
My Bro has been up at Whale Channel a couple times this season now and it has been brutal.
He also talked to some Langara fishers at the airport and was the same thing.
Where have the fish gone?

i just got back from guilding a 4 day trip off Masset w/ one of our sister lodge... with first 2 days on the water, managed to limited out 2 of my guest with both spring and coho..With the 3rd day blowing SE 35+ we decided not to go out, just stay in the cabin drinking all day long... Couple decent fish to be mention, 38lb spring being the largest of the trip, 36, 33 and follow with lots in the mid to high 20s fish... I have to say its decent fishing but you need to know where to go!!!  Good luck fishing

Hey Steelhead King,
Good haul there. Overall how have you found this year at Langara to be compared to other recent years?
Maybe next year I'll fish in a red instead of a yellow boat.  I just hope I can go again!

Fishing is slower in the month of May and June but picking up from mid june on...  Fishing this year is really depened on the tide, you really have to know where to go during certain tide... But over all its a decent year.. so far
