Chehalis River Aug 3rd
« on: August 03, 2008, 05:23:21 PM »

Headed down there this morning for some Steelhead fishing.
Fish were caught. No Chrome Springs though.

After taking a good view at the hatchery situation, I'm realizing it will take nothing short of a miracle to turn the river west at 500 meters east of the hatchery, where it runs north to south. This isn't something that is going to happen overnight either. Until then, unless you want to bushwhack the forest, there is very limited water to fish below the camp.
As for my bushwhacking and fishing along the river through the forest....we'll just end the report there ;)

I hope there will be some good news to come . Last year they put money into making those holding ponds . That was a waste of time because there all washed down river again . It would be nice to see the river split at the bridge cut through the camp ground and to the hatchery ;D. I think the way it is now Fisheries has to truck all the fish out , do they not? I can't see any juvenile fish  surviving what comes out of the hatchery into what? Easy prey for the birds . ???

Every single puddle along the river had juvenile fish in. I could not believe what some of these fish were living (doing well) in. Most of these puddles and tiny side streams have decent cover as well. Some of them were even holding decent size trout if you looked hard enough. Others were deeper then they were wide and were covered in log jams. The lower river is prime juvinile habitat.

If your talking about the woody debris structures they put in last year I was down there a month ago and all of them are still there and functioning well!

Nice pics of some instream work, good to see. Man I just don't get out to the Chehalis enough anymore didn't even know the structures were there.

I really like the idea of some cooperation and trail creation. Sounds like great rewarding work for local young people and a fabulous opportunity to open up some of that flow again.

that instream work with the pictures was done last September and i would have to say POORLY planned as the first high water took them out,  the trail work will be a co-ordinated effort between the native band, BCFDF and labour supllied elsewhere. I wont get too much into it as the final plans arent completed but will fill in more info as it gets later into this month.

I'm sorry but you are extremely misinformed on that work.  All of the structures are still there and functioning as designed.

Most of the boulders have been washed down river . The pools  are not as big as they were when the work was completed last year when I took those pictures . I was there last coho season and most of the rock had pushed down river after the high water. Yes , the logs still held because of the cable they use to anchor them . I'm planning another trip out that way in the next week to take some more pictures so I will take note  ;)

washed down, or covered with gravel?  I've looked at jobs before and the hydraulic calcs were off just a tad.  The first runoff to hit the river filled the pool with gravel.

Im misinformed?? lol  go there and tell me that theres logs still sticking out of the bank anchored in above the bridge<<<>>> lol,   even the large fir that was anchored with roots this past winter was washed down stream this summer during freshet!

You are misinformed lol, as there were no logs cabled in above the bridge last summer so I'm not sure what your talking about.

Very short river that rises quickly and floods faster that any other i have seen .  A big waste of money to try and fix any river system that is subject to fast rises in my opinion.

I was there the day it got blocked off , drained ...then filled  almost took my life. I have an extream amount of respect for rivers like the chehalis now and would rather be caught in 30 foot swells on the ocean.

look at the picture of the log that is on shore above the bridge,  that was secured in originally and was there in late september,   first high water    toast,
All the log structures placed last year were below the bridge.  That may be a piece of wood from a past project but to me it looks like a natural log.  I don't know of any agency that would cable a log with no rocks to ballast it on a bank like that ??? What would I know I was only involved in the cabling of the aforementioned habitat structures.
