Upper Skagit River, August 26th 2008
« on: August 28, 2008, 10:49:03 AM »

Well I set off on Tuesday AM for the 2 hour trip to the Skagit.  This was my first time.  Drove to the site on Hwy 3 and parked about 8:30 m.  Not to bad a day but a little cloudy.  Fished a few runs near the hwy with no luck so headed down the trail with high hopes.   Tried a few runs on the way down but the water was very high and there was no chance to cross the river where the fishing looked like it may be better.   Got down near the campsite and the rain started up.  Heavy showers for the next couple of hours.  Still no fish either on my fly line or even seen.  By now I was soaked right thru and getting real cold.  :'(   Started to walk back for the 1 hour trek.   Never saw one other sole on the river or trail.  Talked to  few fishers when I got back and was informed I went on the wrong day.  To much run off from the recent rain.   I think I may try it again when the rain stops or a few days and the river comes down a bit.  Forever the optimist.   ::)

Did you park at Sumallo grove and walk downstream? If you did then you went the right way for the upper section, I was there 3 days ago and got into a few fish using nymphs only 1 on the dry fly

I did park at the Sumollo grove.  I am hoping for 4 or 5 dry days then heading back up to try again.  Have you ever fished in the Sumallo River.  It would be much easier to fish I think.

I couldnt figure out how to send u a email so Ill just ramble on here.... If you walk downstream from sumallo follow the trail for about 20 min or so until you can see the river.... if the river drops you can access here and cross the river its a great place to start... the river does need to be on the lower side to be able to walk and wade this section, you have to work for it scramble over logs ect but its a great walk and wade section. You can also just stick to the trail and access the river when you see it as you walk along the trail. The other option is to go in the other way and park at the 26 mile day use area and hike up or down the river from here. The river a little wider and easier to wade for the most part.... some great runs around here if you are willing to explore. I have had good success with prince/hares nymphs until the risers show and then a elk caddis or para adams seem to work well... have fun, Id tag along with you but getting married in a week so a little busy.. maybe after Sept is great up there
