Scented Glo-Bugs or Wet Flies
« on: September 03, 2008, 02:09:04 PM »

hey

I know it defeats the purpose and some would frown upon it but would soaking glo bugs and other steelhead flies in krill oil , anise or any other scent be any more effective than just plain old flies ???

Im planning on decreasing my chances of getting a Vedderhead by switching to the fly this year.

Anyone tried it with success or have any suggestions ???

Using scent on flies directly can have negative effect on the fly the next time you go to use it.  As the oils saturate the feathers and mat them up. If you are going to use scent on a fly I would clinch knot a small piece of wool on to your leader, apply scent to the wool, and you will get more use out of your flies over the season.

 SLOPPY TOSS!!! Great saying!

Fly guys might not approve but Ive had good success with a small scented rubber worm on the end of my fly rod.

Another quick and easy thing to do would be to put scent directly on to your leader. The little bit of scent that sticks to your leader would be enough for the fish to pick up on.

Yeah I know,  dumbass idea  :-\

I will try normal steelhead flies until I get bored , then I will break out the stupid ideas. Those cold Vedder afternoons are all a big haze anyway...........

Steelhead are very receptive to a swung fly. Just pick the proper water....hopefully water that hasn't been pounded by the goo slingers, and you will do well. A good tip is not to dredge bottom, if you are getting hung up on you are fishing too deep. I like my fly about 30"-36" off bottom when fishing for winter runs. As far as patterns go it is much the same as gear fishing. Match your fly to the river conditions. I have caught steelhead on the Vedder using everything from Crazy Charlie's to 6" Intruders.

Oh yeah.....If you add scent to a fly it will ruin it's action in the water.......Save the scent for your gear rod.

There are a few favorites I have for the Vedder: egg sucking popsicle with blue crystal flash, black, purple, and blue marabou.....I call it the Bulkley Bandit
pink intruder, very sparse, with some flash
blue, black, and chartruse intruder, very sparse
crazy charlies with a hint of pink or orange
size 2 coastal skunk with a pink but

But when it comes down to it......it's all about presentation.

I'm sure there are many other favorites out there from different anglers. Steelhead are not smart creatures, they just have likes and dislikes that need to be addressed.
