Borax headache?
« on: November 03, 2008, 12:08:39 PM »

I cured up a bunch of roe yesterday and ended up with a splitting headache.  Thinking back, I realized that this has happened in the past, but this is the first time that I put two and two together and decided that it may have actually been caused by the roe cure.  Has anybody else experienced this?  Perhaps it is just an allergy, but to the best of my knowledge I have no allergies, so that would surprise me.  Are borax-based roe cures a health concern?  Should we be wearing masks when using it?

I've never had any problem. If you think it's the borax causing your headache, try curing outside perhaps under your porch or garage.

Are you using some of the other commercial cures that are available? You might be sensitive to some of the chemicals in the cure,  I would suggest working with a dust mask if you have  allergies, or asthma.

Using straight Borax I have had zero issues, but I agree who knows what they put in cure mixes?

he has got to be talking about the chemical cures because Borax is just soap. I usually open a window when im curing roe so that my girl doesnt scream about the smell and then when its drying it has to be outside or something LOL

Borax, sodium tetraborate decahydrate, is not acutely toxic. [6] Its LD50 (median lethal dose) score is tested at 2.66 g/kg in rats. [7] This does not mean that it is safe, merely that a significant dose of the chemical is needed to cause severe symptoms or death. Simple exposure can cause respiratory and skin irritation. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal distress including nausea, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Effects on the vascular system and brain include headaches and lethargy, but are less frequent. "In severe poisonings, a beefy red skin rash affecting palms, soles, buttocks and scrotum has been described. With severe poisoning, erythematous and exfoliative rash, unconsciousness, respiratory depression, and renal failure." [8]

A reassessment of boric acid/borax by the United States Environmental Protection Agency Office of Pesticide Programs found potential developmental toxicity (especially effects on the testes).[9] Boric acid solutions used as an eye wash or on abraded skin are known to be especially toxic to infants, especially after repeated use because of its slow elimination rate

The dust that comes out of the pro cure bottles is very fine stuff. I've cured roe and had my face washed before bed time to find the cloth turned pink from the cure. I could see that if you got a headache from either the borax or pro cure or a combination of both, then you should try and ventillate the curing area better and definately wear a mask.At least while you're mixing the goodies together.

I open pour close and mix in a clear plastic bag (yard trimming bags).  Maybe you want to do the same.

You should see the fine dust that comes out just pouring the stuff into the bag absd you will get a good quaff of dust that is hard to see under certain light!1  I've seen it in my shop when I have cured roe!

I always try to make sure my face is nowhere near where im pouring (like leaning back away from it) as you can see the cloud of colour when you pour it out. anything heavier then air is no good for us to breath in  ;)

I've seen it that's why I do the entire process IN the big yard trim bag, very much like developing film.
