Nooksack River for Steelhead??
« on: January 11, 2009, 10:18:55 PM »

I popped into a really sweet little tackle shop in Lynden yesterday. I was asking them about steelheading in Washington and they told me about the Nooksack River which opens for Steelhead in the middle of January. Has anyone fished this river? I am familiar with it just from driving up to Baker but have never actually fished it. Any replies would be appreciated.

the tackle shop is called Dave's Sporting Good's, it is on Front Street, right by Wood's Coffee. I was very impressed, tons of hunting and fishing gear, with great prices. Its kinda cool to see how the fishing differs just twenty minutes away. Very few floats to be found and lots of drift gear, like slinky weights, spin & glos, little corkies, cheaters, pills, ect. Anyways, very cool little shop

No, I wouldn't say full of fish by a long shot.  I fish it regularly and just as it starts to get good they close it off.  The hatchery Steelhead run is small at best and the wild fish run closes the end of February.  The last two weeks of the season can be fairly good but there is LOTS of pressure unless you fish below Lynden and that's Coho or plunking water mostly.  Just my two cents.

The nooksack is allowed to be netted all but 8 hours a week....kind of wrap your mind around that...8 hours a week it's supposed to be net free..it's not as the nets are just not minded or taken down...This is during salmon season but you get my drift here..that was once a pretty impressive river...It's a good spot for dollies (which your not supposed to target) some whitefish...the odd steelhead....My first one was out of that river. i'll post a pic of it...you'll see what I mean when you see it...

I love to walk it, great nymphing etc. guys you run into are allot friendlier then the gong shows you see up here..it's a great escape to fish when your nerves are frazzled from the vedder...but I wouldn't bet the house on catching anything that equals the V.

Very sad but thank Judge Bolt for that!!!

that is pretty sad, the guy at the tackle shop also mentioned that it is a good river for dollies, especially up above the falls at Maple Falls.
