Chilliwack River, April 4th 2009
« on: April 05, 2009, 08:45:16 AM »

Began my day at the clean-up.My first but certainly won't be my last!Warm greetings by all there and I felt right at home immediately.Lew assigned us to a location and I met my team members.First class people.Off we went to the Cedar run.Once there we picked up an old hideabed,a large old dead dog,a mattress, bed frames, busted up old chairs and garbage that was too numerous to mention.Lew had said there were two mattress's.Scouting revealed some campers who had it at there site! Rick and I drove down to the gun club and dropped the stuff into the dumpsters with the help of one of the directors.
This is where my fishing report begins in earnest. The clean-up had given me the opportunity to see the water conditions top to bottom. The slide above Tamahi was`really coloring the water.Visibility was only two feet in that area. The one at Ranger was some what less but still not great.I decided to start at the hole below the slab. The water was so low there were hardly any holding spots and the main run below was being pounded from both sides as the only show in town.To my dismay I saw a large computer monitor someone had discarded and someone else had thrown a rock through the screen sitting in the campsite.I loaded it in back and decided to take it to the Dumpster ras well. Many of the vehicles on the side of the road turned out to be clean-up participants thus fishing pressure was surprisingly light considering the balmly almost summer like day. On the way down I saw some of the crew I started with so I stopped to offer to take their bags of trash in.They said they had asked the campers if they could dispose of the second mattress and they had agreed so they were glad to see me with my old truck.
After dumping I fished from below the Cedars all the way down thru to the tail-out of Allison. No takers.Light pressure but no luck by anyone I talked to.Time out for lunch.
Back at it this the  river upsream of Yarrow.Arriving at this point the river had cleaned up a bit but was still murky.Moderate fishing pressure on all the runs I visited.Saw no fish played or coming out.I said "what the hell",I am not wasting a glorious day like this on yard work so I walked down and talked to a couple of guys fishing one of my favourite runs.Turned out one of them was Dion from the forum.Very nice to meet you.A half hour of rotational angling brought me to mid-run.No-one said they had seen anything taken today.Deli, shrimp, jensen eggs all to no avail.I tied up a very large roe bag with bright wool and boom! The float went down so hard I heard it pop! They fight was on.I have never had a better fight from a fish.It was an adrenaline rush all the way.Several minutes of motion frozen in time and we could see it was good sized hatchery hen about 12 lbs. They fight belied the size. The gent I was fishing above helped me dispatch I and I was suddenly a kid again! While I was filling out my licence we chatted on how he had just fished that exact spot moments before.Imentioned the large roe bag.He tied on some roe, drifted thru and bam!Fish on.Turning to me with a mile he said "it must be a roe day!"I replied it would seem so.His fish was a beautiful brite chrome wild hen of about ten lbs.Gently realeased in the water. What a thrill.I could see everyone in the areas mood elevate immediatly. What a day.Beautiful weather, great fun at the clean-up and a prize fish for the table.I even got a Tim mug.I should have bought a lottery ticket! No pics sorry.

Glad to hear you have a splendid day.
Aren't those cleanups just great? You even got rewarded with a fish! (That always happens with cleanup newbies - it's the Old Wack's way of securing new cleanup participants every year! ;D

I had a great day, too, except that there were no chrome smiles for me. In hindsight, I should have tied on some roe imitation - the fish didn't even look at my flies all day. :-[ (10-0 this year - I can't believe it!)

I did see quite a few fish caught in the lower - mostly smaller (7-8 pound) hatchery fish. All were caught on gear - with roe or shrimp.
Maybe it's time for me to dust out my bait casters and forget this fly fishing nonsense! :P

Nicely done, you certainly were rewarded for all your hard work with a nice fish. Thanks to you and all the others from this forum that were able to come out. I believe we had just under 150 people take part.

Was great to see a good number of families with their young children out as well, that's our future in making the river something we can all be proud of.

To others that were tied up yesterday and could not attend please mark July 18 on your calender for the next cleanup.  You will find out as Milo says, you will feel real good during and after the cleanup knowing you have given something back to the river that gives us so much enjoyment.

PS Some of the cleanup crews saw some fish caught in the Canal area. ;D
