Babine Lake?
« on: August 04, 2009, 11:51:03 PM »

Well....
My girlfriend and her family are taking me on a fishing trip to Babine Lake for sockeye and lakers/rainbows.

I will have salmon rods for downrigging (will be renting a boat) and also taking my fly rods (maybe a light spincaster?).
First of all what should we try using for the sockeye and for the lakers down deep?
Do any of you have experience fly fishing up here? Any suggestions on flies to use, both dry and wet?
I've heard it has some of the best fishing for big rainbows on the dry fly anywhere in the world.

Any help would be great. Thanks,
Dan.

If you go to the fishing reports section of Fish B.C. some individuals are giving information as to the rigging to use when fishing the lake. If you are planning on river fishing be careful, the area is well known for its Grizzly bear population and freshly caught sockeye just adds to the problem.  Might want to stop in Smithers and buy some flies in the fly shops,  as well as  get up to date information on how that area is fishing this year.

I haven't fished Babine in a few years, but it was great the couple of times I was there. Flyfishing in the bays can be fast and furious and the fish are large and wild. If you are anywhere near the west end of the lake a trip to Rainbow Alley is definitely worth the trouble. Never fished for lakers or anything other than rainbows there, but we were rarely short of action.

What flies were they, if you can remember?
Need to pick some up tomorrow....

Standard searching patterns worked. wooly buggars, Careys, Spratleys and mid sized streamers.

Good luck, post some pics when you get back.
