lake trout (char) and landlocked salmon
« on: May 06, 2009, 07:30:57 AM »

Do you know any places where you can catch lake trout ? fishwizard says there is no lake trout in buntzen lake or pitt lake.
Also in some lakes it is listed salmon; i didn't understand very well, is the migrating salmon or the juvenile salmon?
Does the juvenile salmon grow enough to be worthy catching and what are the rules for juvenile salmon in lakes? Also, as i understood in some lakes there is landlocked salmon. Do you know such a place and what are the rules for this kind of salmon?

Cant help you with all the questions.
Most people refer to land locked salmon as Kokanee, which I believe are Sockeye, although I understand that there may also be Coho landlocked as well.
The only place in the lower mainland that has rumors of lake trout is Allouette Lake. Never caught them there myself, but fisheries did stock them in there many, many years ago. Lately I have heard and read of rumors of Lake trout in Stave lake, but the only real way to confirm is to catch one yourself.

can i troll the lake with an inflatable raft with electric motor? how bad can be on a windy day?
i couldn't find allouette lake's dept map with fishwizard
on the sharphooks website it is written that there are lakers in buntzen, pitt, etc but you can't search
a location for lake trout, because the lakers are not in the list of fish; kind of nobody got one ;

I have found this page:
http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/documents/fishfacts/laketrout.pdf
"...The species is absent from Vancouver Island and the Columbia system, but has
been introduced to the lower Columbia, lower Kootenay, and Okanagan regions...."
Are we in lower columbia?

If there are lakers in Allouette, you will need a downrigger to get to them, except very early in the year, they are a little closer to the surface. So no, you would need something a little more substantial than a raft to attach the down trigger to.
Allouette can kick up something fierce, I've been chased off that lake probably more than any other lake in the lower mainland.
You could try in the eatrly morning, or later in the evening, when the lake in much calmer.
I find the best place for maps on the web is Anglers Atlas.

Even if there are lakers in Alouette (and I'm not saying there are) then trying to specifically target them is a waste of time.
You would be targetting Bulls and Rainbows if you fish Alouette with downriggers - a bycatch of a Lake Trout would be a bonus.
Make sure you get a photo of one if you do win the lottery.
