there are springs already in the Fraser. normally the Fraser opens May 1st for retention but in the last couple years they have closed it until June 15/16th just as they did again this year.

the springs will start trickling in around mid April (i have seen some caught then) and just get more and more until late fall maybe even early winter(not sure cause im fishing elsewhere by these times of the year)

i think there could be 15 books written on that subject, what with 5 types of salmon and all their quirks and preferences. i took out a few videos from the library, they were informative, but time on the water i think is most important. i'm a rookie on the fraser too, and i have a healthy respect for that river and it's power. i used to fish with my dad for salmon  over on the island in sooke but he's too long in the tooth now, and we caught plenty of salmon there. i can't afford to tow my runabout to the island, so i'll probably launch it at kilby around the end of august to the end of september and hone my less than stellar fishing skills on pinks. i hear they're relatively easy to catch, and that my bolster my confidence. now if i can just figure out how to drop the anchor from my non-walk-thru windshield....hmmmm

Not to worry you will do just fine.My advice.forget about anchoring and beach the boat on a likely bar.Fish from shore you will have a blast.Better yet take an experienced angler along and the learning curve will shorten appreciably.

To drop the anchor from you non-walkthough, just run the anchor and rode back into the cockpit and deploy by hand from there.  No need to do a balancing act on the bow.

However, Riverman's suggestion makes more sense.  I too am a newbie (hadn't been bar fishing since I was a kid) and found that some of the old-timers will offer to help out us newbies....just takes a little courtesy.....and a beer or two.

I saw a number of nets set up around the Rosedale Bridge.  There must be some springs in there for sporties!
