What line do you prefer?
« on: May 05, 2009, 09:23:55 PM »

been 3 years since i bought a flyfishing line and it's time to upgrade. I looked at SA website and they have so many lines to choose from -\
I'm looking for a floating line that has low or no line memory to be used on lakes and rivers. Is the sharkskin line a good line?

I use to have SA Trout line and it was an okay line I think.  i wonder how the SA Expert Distance performs.

I have heard the sharkskin is good but makes a lot of racket when you cast it.  I don't think you can really go too wrong....though i have had a rough time with airflo lines.

RIO GOLD casts smooth had very little memory and not too bad in cold weather either

Another vote for Rio Gold, but surprisingly the line that I have found best in cold water is Cortland 444 Classic floater in peach - it's an older design, inexpensive, but has great low memory characteristics.

Do not buy the SA GPX. It was recommended to me by M&Y but it coils like a slinky, even when stored off the reel and stretched prior to use.
I would be willing to sell it cheap, however :'(

What weight is it and what's cheap? Email me if you'd like.

RIO Gold all the way, best floating line on the market IMHO.

DON'T get a sharkskin, they are absolute CRAP.

Rio gold is a nice line but the line coating crack is a common problem.  i used the new Shark skin GPX taper, its great but vey noisy when shooting line or fighting fish.  Airflo 40+ is a very good distance line if you looking for a shooting head style. Airflo ridge line is very nice line, low memory, smooth casting. If i gonna pick one line i think i would stick to the SA GPX.  Very nice taper, very present line to fish with..

I have been using Aqua Nova for ten years and quite happy with it. Buy Canadian! My question is how often do you clean and dress your lines? Many line issues are solved with proper maintenance.

I clean the lines twice a year.  never have treated the lines. What can I use? And to clean I use soap and luke warm water.

Anybody used the Rio Selective trout ll line or hear anything about it?

Any line dressing will do. All fly shops sell them. Easy to apply also. For dry lines I do it twice once with a dressing, then with Muslin.

I like the SA Nymph taper for casting big bugs or turning over a really long leader.

The Extreme Distance line casts best if you are carrying a lot of line in the air. I don't really recommend it for daily lake/river use.
