Chilliwack River, July 1st 2009
« on: July 01, 2009, 10:42:03 AM »

Slipped out for a brief look at the Vedder this morning and water conditions were good. Saw Kingpin's brother there too and we fished together, he with the fly rod and I with bait, ::)  I  looking for a chinook, he the friskey rainbows. Good old Kingpin was still in bed his brother said. :o ;D Sleepy head. ;D :D

We hooked a couple each and mine all fell off at my feet before I could see if they were hatchery or not as it is always interesting to see what the ratio of wild to hatchery is.

A number of tents were set up on the sand, by The Bell. They were still sleeping as I went by them, hope they cleanup after they leave, I will be checking. Rods were leaning against the tent.
Saw one angler long lining the Diving Board run and another angler short floating above him.

I am sitting on a log when the short floating angler comes up to where I am sitting, I donot pay much attention but I do when I see his foot coming down on the end of the rod. "Watch The Rod I Yell", just in time as the foot misses the rod tip by inches if not millimeters. I know it was my fault as I should not have had it laying where it was. I apologize for yelling so loud at him. It turned out he was from this forum and so we had a common bond. Adrian and I had a great 30 minute visit and he has the same concerns re gravel removal, Run of the River and Fish Farms. I agreed to take him bar fishing in the Leaf Craft one day so we can discuss these matters further. After parting I hook a few more small rainbows that fall off as I feel I am using too large a hook, too big for their small mouths. I have some cottonwood white fluff on my line and the rainbows are even chasing that too. ;D

I decide to head home as no chinooks around it seems but on the way out Keith said he heard of a couple taken up river. Anyway it was a loverly morning to be on the river and it will only get better in the days ahead.

Thanks for a quick update over there.

It has been a decent number of years since I have been over that way to try to hook up with a Spring.
At the time I used to go, I usually had good success on almost every outing.

Seeing I am "trapped" in the Lower Mainland this year (school commitments) and not up in the Chilcotin region as usual, I will be getting out to explore our local rivers for Springs a bit more this year.

There is another river I used to have decent success for Springs, but it has been a number of years since I have hit that one as well.

I am even looking at trying bar-fishing the Fraser, but question whether the experience will be able to equal a Interior rainbow or bull trout on the fly???!!! :'( ::)

We will see.  Time will tell.

Thanks for the report Chris. I wish I could be out fishing but unfortunately I am recovering from back surgery that I had 2 weeks ago. I will be lucky if I can fish by August.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Sorry for the spelling errors etc. above, was in a rush to make a meeting. but those not on the river would like a report. I will update it now too.

Also just talked to The Master and he connected with his first chinook of the season, 17 pounds, on his first trip to the Fraser for chinook. ;D He said it was just luck as the visibility was not that good but there is a lot of fish in the system right now so I guess one got close enough for a boo and much more. ;D ;D

He said it was a thrill to once again to hear the clink of the bell  followed by being slacked line as the fish rushed towards the rod then seeing the pole standing straight up, hard to beat, it gets ones heart beating just thinking about it doesn't it?

We were out on the vedder this morning too.
Visibility is around 3-4 feet down low, 4-5 up around allison and unlimited above ranger run sldie.
Tonnes of anglers lined up at Ranger run, probably where the action came from this morning.
Checked out the hatchery, no fish and they are re-finishing the holding tanks with concrete (or thats what it looked like anyways).
Didn't see any fish hooked or taken, although we "heard" of one in the lower.

Went back down river to Peach and decided to bring out the 4 wt.
Just as we got there we see a jet boat coming up the new back channel at Peach, the area has changed alot since Steelhead season.
Lots of guys long lining, don't think i saw anyone short floating today except for the couple guys targetting smolts with worms and shrimp  ::)
Ended up landing probably around 15 trout (smolts) on the fly (olive woolly bugger), a couple of which were between 10-12 inches. Lost and missed ALOT more.
Most of the fish were a small 6-8 inches (I would say thats the average right now).
Every single fish landed between me and Ryan (believe he got about 5 or 6 on bait) were hatchery fish, all were released.
Came across a small 4 or 5 incher that had been hooked far back in the throat and had died.
All the ones hooked on the fly were either in the tip of the top lip, tip of the bottom lip, or right in the corner of  the mouth.
Good fun for anglers just starting out, even better for people just learning to fly fish.  ;D
