The Tidal Fraser River water clarity has degraded tremendously in the last week since I returned from Denmark. This is of course due to the significant rise of river level recently. Too bad, because spincasting and flyfishing could have been very good if clarity stayed or continued improving as the way it was. Now the clarity will most likely only improve in August, hopefully before the arrival of pink salmon.
The last several days I have spent the evening hours wandering around Steveston area, targeting peamouth chub and northern pikeminnow, which are very abundant throughout the entire system during this time of the year. They are small, they don't put up a lengthy fight, but the constant bites make this a rather appealing fishery that I enjoy doing from time to time in a warm summer evening.
On Monday and Tuesday evening, I fished on No. 3 Road Pier while watching the odd white sturgeon being pulled in. These white sturgeon were actually fairly big, in the 3 to 5ft range. Whole eulachon used on a hook seems to be the ticket.
Tonight I was down at Garry Point Park. The fishing was rather slow at the beginning, but once one fish found the bait, the rest came soon after. The tiny float dipped throughout the evening and I managed to bring in a few dozen fish in their typical length - 8 to 10 inches. They were mostly peamouth chub, with the odd northern pikeminnow and sculpin mixed in between.
Summer is almost halfway through, make the best of it by enjoy these wonderful evening fisheries that are available within a short travel distance from Vancouver.
Good luck!
