Tidal Fraser River, October 19th 2009

Having fair amount of work to do on the desk today, so I only managed to pop out to Garry Point Park for a brief hour in the evening to catch the last bit of the incoming tide. The target species were trout and char with the light spinning rod. Water clarity has gone down quite a bit compared to the end of last week, but it is still very reasonable for fishing.

Not a whole lot to report except a brief excitement at one of my usual productive spots. After a few casts, one fish darted out of no where and took a swipe at the lure just before it came out of the water but it completely missed it. Judging by how fast this ambusher was going for it, I was quite confident that it would go for it again. Last year I mentioned briefly about how bull trout seem to react down here, that they have a tendency to be followers or ambushers. I find the ones that sit in the shallow and aim for the surprise attack tend to be repeat biters, while followers tend to be curious but less willing to commit.

Anyway, a few casts later, sure enough, it did the exact same thing and this time it did not miss, I did not miss either. :) The bull trout measured 38cm long, just another typical specimen in the Tidal Fraser River.

I'm not sure why I look like that in the photo. I'm really not on crack...

Beside this fish, I had another fast take which never came back for second.

Well done Rod.  My Dad and I made it out today to do some bar fishing.  My Dads 82 so its something he can still do and enjoy.  We were out for high tide this morning.  We hooked 5 jacks, one being a hatchery,  2 cutthrout, 1 coho and 3 small sturgeon.  My Dad even got a double header with jacks.  Some excitement for Dad is good once in awhile.  A good sign of still lots of fish moving through.
