4x4 accessable lakes and rivers?
« on: October 24, 2009, 02:30:27 PM »

I'm looking for salmon and trout, plus lower fishing pressure than the easy access places.

Vehicle in question is an old toyota pickup that goes pretty much anywhere.  Experienced 4wheeler with full recovery gear. Have access to both a canoe, and a small aluminum boat with motor.  Enjoys camping, even in snowy conditions.

Where do you suggest I go in search of fishing?  Prefer to stick in region2 for now, but willing to consider a multi-day trip in the springtime.

I think in general people might be a little hesitant to post this stuff online, because well-known 4wd areas usually get trashed by drunk party-ers.  The Squamish River Valley is nice in the winter and require clearance once the ruts in the snow have formed, and its too cold for party-ers at that time of year.  Some areas off the West Harrison Road may fit your description as well- its a beautiful area as well.  Its remote enough thats it doesn't see a lot of people, but its hard to do in a day-trip.  Might head up there this winter, if you're interested in fishing bull trout, let me know and I'll keep you posted.

Perhaps, but I'm not looking for that, I'm looking for nice lakes and rivers.  I found cypress lake at the top of eagle ridge, but there doesn't seem to be any fish in it.  Access is difficult, even for well built 4x4s.  I haven't done much exploring along the Harrison, parts north of the lake look promising, but would require an overnite camp.

If anyone wants to go 4wheeling with me, let me know.

I've never fished for bull trout before and would love to give it a whirl.  I don't have any flyfishing gear yet, just a centerpin rod and a small trout spinning rod.

No, I didn't mean to imply that you were going to decorate the area with Kokanee cans, but once its on the internet anyone can read it.  Your email is hidden so any info we give you in private.

If you get into a lake using 4X4  remember you must get out .    If it rains a couple hours while you are there fishing ;  the trail / road would get worse.    There is rule of thumb I use in the Cariboo trails  ;  1 hour of steady heavy rain,  and I should be packing up and on the way out within the next hour.    Wait 2 hours or longer and you might have to use your winch or get stuck.    Unless you have one of those giant tire 4X4s.  Or if the trail is super hard pack and downhill all the way out.

Gentlemen, thanks for the tips.

I'm a firm subscriber of treading lightly when going 4wheeling.

I have a backroads mapbook and have been exploring, anytime I haven't been fishing.  But it's too tempting to go fishing right now to do any exploring.

Methinks my next trips will be upriver, north of Harrison Lake.

Anyone wanna go 4wheeling?

If you want to send me some beta, email me.

Brian, make your email visible.  The Lillooet is gorgeous country, never fished it at this time of year though.  I drove the section from Pemberton about half way down the road.  i didn't make it down to Harrison Lake.  I left at 9am, fished and explored about 5-6 hrs and made it home at about 2am.  Long day.

its neat climbing out of the temperate rainforest into the alpine forest and then driving into a more arid area not unlike the interior all within an hour or so.

lots of hyper-aggressive juvies

Brian you said ya have a backwoods mapbook so maybe this info is not new but incase this is a dif. map book from what you have...check out: www.backroadmapbooks.   Hook & camtheman also sujj ya get the info.  Great your asking for someone to go with you as 4x4 by yourself is not a good idea.  ( extra cloths canned goods matches candles etc...) incase your 4x4 breaks down.

There are 6 area back road map books avaible for BC.  One of the 6 books is called ; Van Coast & Mountain book which covers Chilliwack Fraser Valley Gold River Greater Van Lillooet Manning Park Powell R. Squamish Sunshine Coast Whistler.
Plus ya can also get Fishing Map Books for BC. They have 4 books on that subject. They also revise the books so they are updated.

On a side note was on the lower Fraser R.; Steveston area on Sat. & the fishfinder had as many as 10 fish symbols showing. Also seen plenty of seals & more than once the seal were splashing about which means they were chowing down a salmon. (coho or chum)  :)
