Roe - coho vs. chum
« on: November 01, 2009, 06:05:51 PM »

OK - here's a question for the roe experts out there.  I'd like your opinion about which roe is best for coho - all things being equal.  My roe "mentor", Stratocaster, likes coho roe - and we've done very well with it this year.  I've also done well with red spring roe as well.  We recently took the opportunity to obtain some nice chum roe which is curing right now!   ;)

So - which is the best?  Coho?  Chum?  Spring?  Pink?  Steelhead?  Or does it really matter??

Personally, I'm leaning toward the coho roe... ;D

Coho roe is big for me but chum while bar fishing seems to be hands down the best.  But as ChromeKings states, focus on curing it so it looks their best is very important.

i do have a question regarding fishing with roe though.  Does the scene matters more or the appearance of the roe?  I have cured some roes that don't smell like those Berry's pro-cure roes, but last somewhat longer in the water though.
I usually just air-dry the roe after i get home, cut them in bait sizes, pour them with procure double red (with krill scene), put them in a zipploc bag and shake them.  then i would just keep that in the fridge for a day, borax them thoroughly and in the freezer they go.
Did i miss a step/procedure while curing it?

I think the word you were going for was "scent".  Personally....I like using scents but there were days where partner's roe that was plain procured was working really well but noticed that his roe was nicely done. I also have seen freezer burnt borax crusted roe catch coho and steelhead so go figure!
yes, it was "scent" i was going for  :P
So i guess it's all about presenting the right bait at the right time and to the right fish!  All right, i would give the roe one more try~
thanks for the reply!

I've always found Pink roe to be the best followed by Chum roe.
