Stave and Chehalis Rivers, November 11th 2009
« on: November 11, 2009, 07:44:07 PM »

Hit the Stave at first light in serch of some late fall coho. Saw a couple chromers but none on the end of our lines. Caught and released some chum which were past the smokable stage and saw a few cleanish ones but most were in spawn or post-spawn mode. Decided to head to the Chehalis, haven't been there in a few years and the good fishing grounds are destroyed. That was a sad sight. There were some coho, one summer run steelhead and a ton of chum in the hatchery channel. Walked down and tryed to make my way down to the main stem of the river but gave up. Looked at the old easter seal run and that has changed. The water conditions were on the higher side but with around 3-4 feet of visiblity. Fished for a while and hooked a few chum and gave up. Should have stayed at the Stave. That is really a downer as the Chehalis used to be my favorite river but I won't be back until they move the river back to it's normal spot. My salmon season is done and it was fairly successful. Now it's on to Cutty's and then steely's. On a side note there was some nice cutty's in the Stave that I saw and might go back with the fly rod and some egg and flesh patterns ;)

As the visibility improved, I took out my first ever ClearDrift float.  After hours and hours of casting in the clear water, I had a hit.  I was very happy to I landed a chrome 7lb coho doe.  I did not see many coho.

Steely, do you know if it's possible to catch these Cutty's on a spinning combo? I haven't gotten a fly rod yet and likely won't until the summer, but would still love to try and hook into some of the other trout species we have around here.

You can definitely use a spinning combo for cutthroat trout. A long spinning rod allows you to float fish for them in small flows with a light float setup. A short spinning rod allows you to get into tight spaces and cast a little spoon or spinner. For spoons and spinners, use 1/8oz or lighter with a size 2 or 4 long shanked lure hook. I prefer to use those Mustad saltwater fly hooks as my lure hooks. If you are float fishing, a tiny egg pattern works well. Trout beads, small gooey bobs placed above a size 2 or 4 steelhead hook work well.

They seemed to be in spots where the Salmon weren't as thick. So where you see salmon, fish in behind them or around them. They also like slower water. Tying up some egg patterns as we speak ;D
