My buddy Gary and I entered the derby, his first time and my fourth. Went and registered at Lickman then headed downstream. Fished first thing at dawn above the Train Tressle run and then below. Nothing!! Sure was cold with that wind blowing down our necks. Went and got a coffee and headed up river. Stopped in at the Fish and Game club and there were 7 steelies weighed in by 11 am, with Peter McPherson's 14'3" doe holding first place. Gary and I tried around Tamihi and then went down stream on the south side of the river. Found some nice water and began to work it. I was fishing roe bags and Gary prawn. Gary yells to me that he had two hits and no fish where he is fishing. Then 5 minutes later yells out " I got one... whoa......!" In the air is this beautiful buck shining in the sunlight. After 10 minutes of hard fighting the brute comes to the shore and I scoup up Gary's first steelie, a hatchery buck, and first caught on a CP outfit.
He does the dance of joy and lets out a couple of shouts of glee. We quickly took a couple of pix then off to the Derby Centre to weigh his catch.
Gary is pumped walking his beauty up the steps to the weigh in. Guys are oggling this chromer as we take the fish to the scale. 13'1" and in second place. Gary hangs up his prize along with the others in the wall of fame.
We have a couple of hours for me to get my fish, so off we go. We try and couple areas and then go back to where we caught this steelie. I bumped one but that was all she played. Went back to the Fish and Game Club to see the final results and Gary is secong behind Peter McPherson's 14'3" doe. He won a rod and reel setup, plaque and cup. He was very pumped and proud.
It was a great day on the river with the river looking great. 10 steelies weighed in and a significant number of wild C & R today. Lots of nice prices handed out and a good group of steelheaders on the system once again. 2010 is looking good.
