Chilliwack River, January 8th 2010
« on: January 08, 2010, 06:16:10 PM »

As I mentined under the condition report in general discussion the water was not that great first thing. I heard later some clay had fallen in overnight. As I was getting ready to head to the river The Master phoned and he said he had taken a nice fish, on his fourth cast of the day, ;D his first of the season.

I headed to the scene of yesterday's action and with the visibility around 18 inches I was a bit disappointed but I did miss a fish of some sorts after just a few casts. Whatever it was it would not give me a second chance. ::)

I meet up with Gwyn and we fish the area a bit longer before we change location but we are blanked there too. I went for a good lunch at The Point before heading back to the river and on my arrival I see it had improved greatly. Just as I arrive at the first run I was going to fish a fellow is just landing one. With his fish taken for the day he is heading away from the river but changes direction, coming towards me. He says "got a pen"? I tell him I have which he uses to mark his 7 pound or so fish on his license. Most of us have at one time been in the same situation or with a pen being in your vest for too long and the ink has dried up. Before he leaves he said his friend has just taken one down river and has seen another taken. No wonder with the improved conditions in the afternoon it has helped, as well it appears there is a few fish around today. ;D

I get a call from Pistol Pete to join him down river and on the way to the area he is fishing another angler tells me he has taken a wild and heard of another hatchery taken, the count continues to rise. ;D

I arrive at the area PP is fishing I try a spot below him but all I find is a snag that breaks me off, disgusted I decide to head home for the evening flight. On my way out it was a pleasure to meet up with Justin who said he had come up empty too but had heard of some steelhead also. We have a nice talk before  Justin heads to the run to take advantage of the last hour of fishing time. As I am putting my equipment in the Leaf Mobile I see PP fishing a small fish that turns out to be a small clipped rainbow, gave him a bit of a thrill seeing his float going down. I am sure he thought it would be a steelhead. The duck hunting was a bit better than my fishing trip but 5 shots only gave me 1 mallard.

As I leave the field the rain his pelting down so it looks like it will be a day off for me and others tomorrow but it was encouraging to see a fair push of fish around today. With the brood capture program starting shortly that will be good news, hopefully there will be a good supply of wild wish to give the hatchery the quota of steelhead they require.
