Chilliwack River, January 22nd 2010
« on: January 22, 2010, 08:04:00 PM »

Made it to the river at first light and promptly lost another steelhead, record is now a dismal 1 for 8. ::) Not sure if I will make the playoffs. :o The good news was, Doc came into the run a little later and picked one up that turned out to be a nice wild doe that we successfully got in the tube giving the hatchery their 7th of the season.  That is what the hatchery staff told us when they picked her up, 2 bucks and 5 does. I heard later from another angler that another brood fish was picked up later in the day.

From what I saw and heard fishing was slow in the Lower including the Master and Pistol Pete who were blanked also, that was when we dined at Cookies at lunch time. Not sure how the Upper faired other than I heard a 17 pounder was taken.

Part of the problem was Rodney and Nina came up to do some filming and with a camera on hand it jinxed the afternoon fishing.. ;D ;D Nice to fish with them and Lew though but I was awful tired because of so many hours on the river this week. Walking on those rocks takes it toil on an older body. ::) Also I lost a Maple Leaf Drennan to a log that was a bit sad for me and the float. Have now switched to a Maple Leaf DNE to see if it can have a better hook to land ratio in the days ahead. Good luck to those getting out on the weekend. I may cheat and go out for a bit too even though us retired guys are supposed to be baned from fishing weekend but the way I am fishing I am not much of a threat.

Good report chris, I only heard of 2 fish mid river today, my day was cut short as my son blew a wading shoe and ended up with a cold wet foot. Might sneak out tomorrow, but I think maybe i should stay home and leave it to the workong stiffs that can only fish on weekends. Chris ya gotta get real its not the float its the emblem.

Nina and I enjoy coming out on days when the fish have already moved on after several hot fishing days. ;D ::) Today's trip was more of a self-rewarding break after taking care of some duties at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery. :)

I fished Lickman all the way down to Bergman and I did not see or touch anything myself. Water is in beautiful shape now.

Here's a tip for ya Chris: try a Canuck Drennan. It's on fire lately :)

Nice fish CSNY
I fished that spot just after first light (i saw you there as i was leaving)
I then fished a bit higher up from there joining another angler at this great looking run
After a few casts down goes my float, strike and nothing I reel in to fing all my roe gone :-\
try a few more cast through there but nothing
I am joined by another couple of anglers
I change to a pink worm and after a few casts down goes the float again, strike and nothing :-\
I try the pink worm a few more casts but nothing
Then i change to a dew worm (trying anything and every thing) and the float slows and down it goes, strike and fish on :)
i quickly realise with the small head shakes it must be a small steelhead, then as it comes in closer i realise it is a dolly of about 3lbs
quick release and away it goes
another angler joins the run and he too gets a dolly on a blade
River is in great condition for my liking
will have to try again next week 8)

Three of us fished the upper and mid-river Friday from first light Friday.
I've never seen so many people fishing during the week.
Stopped at the spot on the upper where I got my first Dec. 29th with no cars in sight.
Walked the 15min in to the river and was surprised to see 2 guys standing in the middle of the run. The were moving downstream but very slowly so we moved on.
Two runs later we were fishing an area across from 2 other guys. It looked fishy but no action on either side. One guy went up and the other guy crossed the bottom of the run on his side to a small island.
5 minutes later I casted my jig over to the tailout on the other side of the river maybe 15 feet from where he crossed. I mended my line, but the main current was quite strong causing a bit of a bow. Float goes down - I set the hook and feel the head shake. I start taking up the slack line and a monster piece of chrome leaps high in the air and spits the hook. All three of us got a good look and it was a very large, fat fish.
It was nice to shake hands again, but a lot of walking for 10 seconds of excitement.
1 for 2 in 3 trips this season for me since I started fishing with gear.
