What's the diameter of the float?

Maybe you need a piece if tubing slipped on the bottom with your line running through it.

OK - I'm pretty sure you've got one of the waggler, carp style of floats. I think what you do is run your main line through the eye on the side and then pop the cap at the top and drop in small lead shot for ballast. You'll need bobber stops above and below on your main line to hold the float in place. You want to drop in enough shot to have it sit vertical in the water with the removable top section poking up above the water line as an indicator. Make sense ? Of course, I could be completely out to lunch on this, in which case forget everything I've just said...
