Farmed Salmon Exposed - watch the full film here now
« on: February 18, 2010, 08:47:44 AM »

I found this on my favourite English fishing website and thought it may interest some readers.  The film features Alexandra Morton and Dr Daniel Pauly from British Columbia, as well as other noted experts.  http://www.fishingmagic.com/news_events/news/farmed_salmon_exposed.html

Thank-you for posting that video. Very informative. I've only recently moved here to British Columbia and am now beginning to see this farming crisis for what it is.

Yes Im new to the area too and cant figure out why they need any salmon farms here - there are hundreds of other countries that dont have a wild salmon stock to put at risk. Chile is a big producer, for example, and in NZ I have even seen inland salmon farms which would be much easier to control diseases and pollution without damage to the environment

So that the fish farmers can diminish their competition (wild salmon).

--not sure if this link will work... some reports by Tom Brokaw while at the Olympics about fish farms in BC plus interesting info on a land based fish farm in Wa state.

--the advertisement is almost as long as the story but interesting.

Received today.

"FARMED SALMON EXPOSED" ON WEB - PLUS REVIEWS FROM THE ATLANTIC & ABC TV FOOD CRITIC

My new short documentary, "Farmed Salmon Exposed: The Global Reach of the Norwegian Salmon Farming Industry" is now available online (http://www.youtube.com/user/PureSalmon).

The film has been screened over 30 times in 9 countries around the world since this past November, when it was launched during the Pure Salmon Campaign's Global Week of Action on salmon farms.  One of these screenings, at the recent global Seafood Choices Summit in Paris, caught the attention of ABC TV's award-winning food critic, Steve Dolinsky (http://tinyurl.com/y8wfyl - scroll down to Day 2) and received this positive review by The Atlantic Monthly's Barry Estabrook (http://tinyurl.com/y9vlzxj):

"I've visited salmon farms, read scientific articles, and interviewed the multi-billion-dollar industry's advocates and detractors, but never have I encountered anything as graphic as the film Farmed Salmon Exposed by Canadian filmmaker Damien Gillis...The film in its entirety is positively gut-wrenching...Industry representatives said that the movie was one-sided...Farmed Salmon Exposed is one-sided. It's the side of the industry the multi-national corporations don't want us to see." - The Atlantic

The film will also be playing at a number of film festivals around the world this year, including in Vancouver.  The trailer to the film was seen 35,000 times globally and there have been nearly 20,000 hits on the recently released chapters of the full film.

The 23 min film is available in four short chapters - each showing different impacts of the industry around the world (or go to the Pure Salmon Campaign's Youtube channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/PureSalmon, where you'll find all 4):

1. Introduction to the Global Industry - the ecological, socio-economic, and cultural impacts around the world: http://tinyurl.com/yh7jloa

2. From Norway to Canada - follow a group of Canadians who confront the global industry in Oslo at their annual meetings; learn about the historic impacts of the industry on Norway and Canada - and the politics that have allowed it to happen: http://tinyurl.com/ydv39km

3. Scotland, Ireland, and Chile - the deadly ISA virus destroys the Chilean industry while putting 20,000 out of work; while ISA begins to hit Scotland, whose wild salmon and sea trout have already been heavily impacted by the industry: http://tinyurl.com/yctnwmc

4. Conclusion - and call to action from Dr. Daniel Pauly and others: http://tinyurl.com/yevw5vh

For more information, go to FarmedSalmonExposed.org

And please forward widely - the word is getting out!  As Daniel Pauly says in the film, "The way they can be made to respond is to scream loud enough so that they have to respond.  The best way to do that is in organized fashion."
