Mill Lake, April 19th 2010
« on: April 19, 2010, 07:50:35 PM »

Decided to take the tube to Mill Lake toady
Got there arround 8am
i was suprised to see no one out on the water
I thought i would try the chironomid first
First cast indicator down missed
second cast missed , third cast missed
then nothing for a while so i moved to where i could see some fish rising
Then i got into a few (see pics)
then the bite went off but the fish were rising every where
I noticed that there was a hatch going on and that is what they were feeding on (big black fly with clear wings)
i changed my set up for different flies trying to match the hatch but did not have the right fly so I only got the odd one here and there
I then switched to a spratly and used a quick strip to keep the fly high in the water and this worked well
Nice to see the turtles out basking in the sun
I got a bit burnt (forgot the sun screen) :-[
there was only one other guy on the water in a boat all day

me and my kids tried off the dock yesterday. We were using worms and the only thing we got were some sunfish. We did see a huge catfish at the dock.

Britguy - black bug with clear wings really sounds like a MAYFLY

did it look anything like this one or the other pics on here

we saw a couple mayflies on the water at Lafarge on sunday. I find that they really like hatching in a light rain which helps protect them from predators.

No they were not May flies  more like a flying ant
big black body with clear wings

From an article i read ----
I have seen flying ant hatches occurring from late April through late September. The ants seem to hatch their flying offspring when the weather conditions are just right. The type of ants range from the small reds to the large black Carpenter Ants. The Carpenter Ants seem to be the most frequently observed and are most abundant through April, May and June. The small red ants tend to hatch near the end of July through early August. From late August through September, a medium sized brownish-red ant is hatching that could be mistaken for a terrestrial beetle unless closely examined (very fat and plump).

Fishing Tip

When the fish are feeding on flying ants it is usually on the surface. Try dry flies that resemble the shape, size and color of the flying ant hatch. An excellent imitation is a fly that is tied with cellophane wings. Although it is a good imitation, it doesn't cast well, but it will catch fish. If you can get a pattern with cellophane wings (or similar) which casts well and floats, it should be a winner.
