June 2 marked the 11th annual fly fishing trip to Heffley Lake for my “mentor” and myself. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 11 years in a row. We’ve really gotten to know that lake pretty well, but I know there’s a few secrets left to be discovered. The 11 lb trout hanging on the wall of the resort supports that theory!
The changing weather conditions didn’t help, as fishing was inconsistent. However, once the right chironomid pattern was found, the fishing was decent with several fish in the 18 – 20 inch range brought to hand. The interesting thing is that we found more fish in this size range than the typical cookie cutter 14 – 16 inchers we ran into the last few years. No complaints here – but of course when you hear comments about how the fishing was red hot a couple of weeks ago during the hot spell, well…you get the picture.
Throat samples indicated that the fish were feeding heavily on phantom midge larvae and pupa – not a good thing for the chironomid fly fisher. However, the fish were also feeding on the odd chironomid, some of which were a perfect match to a small gunmetal chromie which turned out to be the go to fly. Leeches also produced the odd fish, as did the Doc Spratley.
Overall, it was a great trip. Sometimes you just can’t control the weather conditions, as the word was that fishing in the region had slowed considerably compared to the last few weeks. I hope I get out again this year – with more constant weather and pressure stability.
