building centerpin rod using spey blank??
« on: June 23, 2010, 01:40:07 AM »

Hello, I need something like 4 pieces of 12~13 ft lenght of centerpin rod.
I cannot find any with 4 pieces. Is it possible to build one with spey blank?
If you have done, what blank should I use? My budget is around $200~$300

btw, blank should be Moderate (or fast?) action and Med-Light power.
line rating around 6 to 12 ( 7wt? )

I am currently building a spey into a center pin.  I chose a Sage VT2 13'9 8 weight.  They do have a 7w 13'0 4 piece 9http://www.sageflyfish.com/dyn_prodlist.php?k=242789).

Anyhow the cork is on the blank and I have the guid spacing done so she could be ready to fish pretty soon!

sage is over rated...i would use a batson blank..either rainshadow or forecast... i made an 11'6 6wt into a pin rod its sweet. they make a 13' 7wt too. the blank s a nice glossy blue colour as well.

http://www.rodandreel.ca/page/speyrodblanks.html here is a link to strykers website they sell batson. you would be paying atleast double for a sage blank

I've got  a 3 piece St Croix 13' 7/8 wt rod blank built into a pin rod and a Beulah 13'6" 8/9 4 piece built into a pin rod.  What your target species is will determine which blank to use.  My 7/8 St Croix has landed springs up to 17-18 lbs but I wouldn't want to hit anything bigger than that, whereas the 8/9 Beulah was my heavy spring rod.  FWIW, the Beulah rod as a spey rod is considered a fast/moderate fast action rod (depending on model of course).   Casting lead however is a different beast and a fast spey rod throwing lead still loads the rod way more than a spey line would.   I'm assuming that you want the rod for a pin reel?  In which case you will want a slightly softer rod anyways. I've seen a lot of Rainshadow blanks built into pin rods and they are reasonably priced.

i own the 8/9 beulah custom built but actually a spey rod. That things a cannon! If i were to get a pin rod done it would be with the beulah classic 7/8 spey. Or their platinum 7wt.

My buddy has a 3 piece he uses for pinning and he hates the 3 piece aspect as you cant break it down in half when moving from spot to spot.  Definitely stick with a 4 piece.

PS - check out www.rodbuildersupplies.com for blanks, componenets, tools, etc....Andy has everything you need and is a great resource in general.
