Tidal Fraser River, August 17th 2010

I went down to Garry Point Park to kill some time this hot evening with the fly rod, just to see whatever would bite. Water clarity remains good. The evening tide was weak, so not a whole lot of sockeye salmon jumping, just the odd ones before dark. Lots of boats were heading in and out, probably all getting their limits of fish just outside the Fraser mouth.

I started out fishing with some pretty big streamers thinking pikeminnows would not be so picky. A couple of weeks ago I had a pikeminnow that was around 8 inches long grabbing onto the size 4 fly. Anyway, no fish were interested in the streamer today. At one point I saw a couple of fish rolling in a bay, so I decided to swithch to a Copper John, thinking that maybe smaller pikeminnow or peamouth chub would give it a go. One flip into the water, I was just about to tighten the line, a fish tugged it hard. That took me by surprise. After some rolls and dives, this came up.
