2010 Chinook
« on: August 04, 2010, 09:41:18 PM »

I rarely post on here but I thought I would share some news from up in the Charlottes!

I work at a fishing resort in the North end of the Charlottes. To date this has been the best year for springs since I have been here! 7 years. He have had tons of Spring s and lots of big fish. One of the guests released a 78 pound Spring today! There has been tons of big fish this year and many days when anglers have been getting into 20 plus Springs a day!

i hope this bodes well for the lower mainland's runs this season!

Very interesting because in my experience and that of others to whom I have talked, the west coast of VI has lots of 3 year chinook (mostly feeders) this year but very few larger fish.   This was the case at Winter Harbour at the end of June, Swiftsure Bank out of Port Renfrew 10 days ago and also at Nootka about the same time.

Are the biggies coming down the coast or are they northern fish?

Have others seen many bigger fish on the west coast of VI this year?

the big ones are skeena and rivers inlet and other northern fish. most of the west coast of van island fish are hatchery fish from the columbia river. the victoria sooke area has had a slow year for springs.port alberni hatchery springs should be showing up on the west coast soon, but that run has been overfished for years and is declining from its good years. fraser river springs nothing to brag about this year.
