Running a kicker directly of transom
« on: August 11, 2010, 10:24:50 PM »

I purchased a 19' aluminum boat and the previous owner ran his kicker of the transom directly and did not have a kicker bracket. I just wanted to get your thoughts if this was a good thing to do and could it cause any damage to the boat? Should I purchase a kicker bracket?

I assume your talking about the ones that lift up and down and attached to the transom.
I also have a 19ft aluminum and run the kicker straight off the transome.
Works great and can hook up the steering rod to the main motor to steer from the front.
I put a stainless steel cover/wrap over the transom where the kicker motor fastens to protect the paint and aluminum.
Should be no issues depending on the kicker and model.
I just didn't want anything permanent like a big bracket on my boat all the time.
Good Luck.

Thx for your reply Rando, it's only a 9.9 Honda so it should be fine. Unfortunately the prvious owner never had the forsight to put a cover on to prtect the aluminum from getting damageg. My thought were to put something on to protect it ftom further damage.

A metal plate would help transfer some of the load

Double Eagle Boats built for many yrs in Richmond BC (they moved their operation to the interior) advertised that ya could mount the kicker to the transom.
In other words no need for a kicker bracket.
Thus I'd imagine it's ok with your boat too.

as far as i know, the brackets are only for bigger boats where the kicker won't fit without it.

definately get a steering linkage for the kicker unless you prefer to fish from the back of the boat
