Anybody on the Vedder?
« on: August 31, 2010, 10:33:05 PM »

Probably won't get alot of input here, but thought it was worth a shot.

I went out to the Vedder the other day and fished the upper canal and also the upper river. Caught a nice 11 / 12 inch rainbow in the canal as well as several smaller guys trying to bite my muddlers ;D

Couldn't believe the tiny little steelhead smolts would hit a 1 inch rolled muddler when they are only about 4 or 5 inches themselves.....      I guess this is how they get so big in the ocean. Went up to the hatchery, saw all the red springs in the creek and in the tanks with a few chrome coho mixed in. Fished the upper river, watched a few bullet coho fly by without a sniff of our flies.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else is tired of sockeye mania and is targeting the smaller, uncrowded flows. I wonder what the bycatch of early run coho and springs will be like this year and if we will see some big pushes of fish when the sockeye commercial fishery dies down. This rain (Tues Aug 31st) should bump the rivers up a little bit and hopefully bring in some fresh fish :D

I was going up with a couple of guys tomorrow but they have canceled out.  Think I will sleep in.  As I live in North Van it is not good a good idea to go up mid morning as the drive home after 3PM and before 7 PM can be murder.

I took a friend on his first fly fishing expidition to the vedder on Saturday. We started at ranger run, then to tamihi rapids then to the canal. Landed 20 or so over the day and let them all go. I even landed what looked liked two baby bull trout. Only ran into 3 other fisherman all day which made it nice an relaxing.
