Springs on the Fraser - alternate methods
« on: September 07, 2010, 02:11:40 AM »

So what if I wanted to head out to the Fraser (Hope area) and leave the Sockeye alone.. What are some alternate methods to bottom bouncing for Springs? And I don't want to bar fish, sounds fairly boring to me.
Perfect opportunity for some 'anti bb' people to prove it isn't necessary.
Thanks,

Rob

Fraser River has a huge drainage which makes it silty most of the time.

With that being said, you need to find the migration path. Easier said then done. Bar fishing can be extemely effective, or ineffective depending on these migration paths.
My personal choice would be float solid salmon roe. Salmon rarely feed on their path, but for some reason they will smack a bunch of eggs.
Take your main line, attach a float, run a piece of hollow core lead on your main line then tie a two way swivel. Chuck your float rig out till you start to see it pointing upstream, then pull it down your line about 4 feet and put about 3 feet of leader line on. Use the baitloop knot and put a small piece of salmon roe on.

Check your roe often, it will decompose quickly.

You can also try spoon fishing creek mouths.
Or fish roe at creek mouths as well.

springs will also tend to be holding in deeper pools or sections of the run.

I have hooked a spring float fishing roe in the Fraser at the mouth of the Coquihalla in Hope.

Some people also bar fish that area.
