Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. launches contest to promote sport fishing VICTORIA – The Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. (FFSBC) has unveiled an exciting free contest featuring B.C. outdoor adventures, fishing gear and more! The contest, held in support of the FFSBC’s new Fishing Buddies Program, runs through August 15, 2010. There is no cost to join the program and anglers who register on the FFSBC’s website can enter to win one of four grand prizes including:
- A guided two-day freshwater fishing trip in Kamloops region with renowned fly fisherman Brian Chan, including three nights accommodation at the South Thompson Inn;
- A guided fresh or saltwater fishing adventure on Southern Vancouver Island with fishing writer and guide D.C. Reid, including two nights accommodation from Accent Inns and a fly-fishing rod and reel set from Island Outfitters;
- A one-week RV rental (including insurance and 1,000 pre-paid kilometres) from the Camping and RVing B.C. Coalition;
- A whitewater rafting adventure on the Thompson or Chilliwack River with Hyak Whitewater Rafting Adventures and a custom rod and reel set from Sea Run Fly & Tackle.
“We hope that this exciting contest will encourage people to sign up for our free Fishing Buddies Program,” said FFSBC President Don Peterson. Under the program, anglers are encouraged to make a commitment to introduce at least one new person to sport fishing every year. The FFSBC will support those making the commitment by providing them with regular information on stocking activities, fishing suggestions, tips and tricks. “The new program has been embraced by the fishing community with retailers, manufacturers, guiding companies and conservation organizations coming on board to promote what they see as a way to increase fishing participation province-wide,” said Peterson.
Contest information, prize details and registration forms are available on

The FFSBC is a not-for-profit organization funded directly by anglers through freshwater fishing licence revenues. It provides stocking programs that support 50 per cent of all fishing in B.C. lakes, fish culture services for sturgeon recovery efforts and programs to enhance access to fishing for all British Columbians. Through these programs, the FFSBC is working to increase angling participation by 30% by 2017. Freshwater fishing in B.C. generates $480 million in annual economic activity, supports more than 1,000 small businesses and creates 3,900 person-years of employment.
