Fishing the Adams
« on: August 29, 2010, 08:53:34 AM »

Fishing the Adams for the big trout that feed on the Sockeye eggs is one thing I can't wait to do this fall.My place is a short walk to the river.A few questions.Do I need a Shuswap tag? Where does the boundary start between the Adams and the Little Shuswap?I fish the canyon regularly but have not fished lower down.Would this be in Roderick Haig Brown park or downstream?

I believe most people walk/Wade from Haig Brown park but I have also heard that some drift it as well in pontoons. I'm hoping to get myself up there this year.

About the tag, I would think you don't need one while fishing in the river but if you fish the lake at all you will.

SHUSWAP LAKE RAINBOW TROUT
Your basic licence must be validated with a
Conservation Surcharge Stamp to keep rainbow
trout over 50 cm from Shuswap Lake1. You must
immediately record your retention on your
basic angling licence.

--as you know Adams below lake is catch and release surcharge is to keep larger trout if caught past the boundary markers... as I recall there are boundary markers where the Adams enters the shuswap
--I still buy a tag for the following reasons... might hook a shuswap lake fish that is not going to survive if released and also to just support the program... you will sometimes get a questionare sent about number of days fishing and fish released etc.

--always check  web for in season changes although they would probably post this popular area

Thanks , good to know of course I have always released all the fish caught in the Adams. If I had thought it thru I would have come to the same conclusion. Time to get another tag!

Hey Riverman,
If you are only a short walk from the river...can you post when you first see a few sockeye showing up.
Thanks :D

Then they all run across the street to the church and get

I heard that there is already sockeye there  ;D my sister was up there and they were watching them spawning already and i think she was there a week ago. They may have been springs but i doubt it with her growing up in a fishing family  ;)

I figured as much but you never know with such a large run of socks. They have been flooding the Thompson for awhile now so why couldn't some be there. She said it was pretty cool having them swim between their legs and watching the trout feeding behind them

At the risk of being called a liar I have seen sockeye in the canyon in August.I believe they are not part of the fablled run but their own small unique run coming up much earlier.I did not see any last year.I am going to chat with the local bioligist about it when I see him .There are springs too in good numbers but these were indisputably socks. I will take some pics this weekend.

Was at the cabin (outflow of Adams) for the Labour day long weekend.Flume creek was lousy with socks. As well I fished Roderick Hague Brown and the mouth. The canyon was spotty for trout feeding on sockeye eggs but the park was just building good numbers of salmon.I did quite well on single egg patterns .The results were not as productive at the mouth although still an awesome experience.I think it may be unfishable in most of this area once it becomes choked with the run headed there. The abundance is something to see already as there were already many photo ops by tourists.Beware bears are big sockeye fishermen as well.
I only saw one big spring in the canyon. He was very coloured and 30plus pounds. My neighbours were out the week before and said a large run of them went up the lake, porpoising as they went.Going again Thanksgiving to see how it is then.Sorry no pics.

A few more sockeye...no springs from the park down to the mouth. More anglers out than last week.

only a small amount of socks in the river and by the looks of it the springs will start crusing up , tons of springs hanging around the mouth. also the water is quite high . ;)
