Chilliwack River, September 28, 2010
« on: September 29, 2010, 06:18:28 AM »

I awoke to some heavy rain so I knew the river would be in tough shape
so I stopped at the long table to get the latest tall tales from the
regulars there.

Then off to Peach road where I found the river high with visibility
around a foot but there was a lot of activity with mire people arriving
by the minute to tackle the conditions. I decided to check a float trap
downstream but only found a few tins and picked some garbage out of the jam.

I made a few feeble cast in the Chum Run but with the rising water and
debris coming down put a quick stop to trying to get a fish to bite. As
I walked up the Rotary Trail many were still hard at it casting out into
the heavy flow.

Next stop was at Gwyn's where I helped him off load his boat from his
truck before we went for coffee and talk about the state of out fishery
and the gravel mining that we both oppose. After coffee we went to
Chilliwack Dart and Tackle to talk about the support Gary has offered
for the Fraser River cleanup on October 16, he was away.

I then continued to the Chilliwack Progress to talk to Jenn and discuss
getting some media attention to the cleanup and also for the Paddle down
the Fraser that starts on October 20 and concludes with a march on the
Cohen Inquiry in Vancouver on October 25. With Jenn I setup a meeting
for tonight at the Cohen inquiry between her and Alexandra Morton's
people who are working on the logistics for the paddle.

Back home for a nap before heading back to the Vedder to see if
conditions were improving as the sun was now shinning.

On my arrival at Lickman Road I found conditions were not that good but a lot of activity taking place.

I will let these video's tell the story.

I think I see Big Fisher in one of the video clips. ;D ;D

Then I headed up river, above the clay slides and found condition good and even broke out the rod.
I had two takes but they could have been smolts that were a pest taking off the roe. I did land one
that was either a coho, chinook or steelhead, could not say for sure as my ID on these fish is not that good.

I then decided to call it a day but as I crossed a small side stream I observed two chinnoks starting to dig their redd.
Good to see, as once spawning activity starts we that fish bait often see things improve fishing wise for us.
A chap that was fishing below me said he had two chinnok jacks, cught before I got there I guess as I did not see him get any.

On the way home I saw a bear cross the road and hustle into the bush.

I guess I better hustle along too as it is nearly time to go to the river and start another fishing adventure.
