rope in river

what is the rope that goes from shore into the river tied to. it is several 100 yrds below tamahi bridge.

I have no idea about that one but i have seen a few tied here and there off of trees. Actually seen them being out to use by some younger guys actually surf boarding on the water using these ropes, makes me assume they put them there as well. Could be what they are from

this one is a black rope 1/2 inch round. there is 2 many boulders to be used for surfing. Could it be just to snag peoples gear, could see lots on it.

 maybe when the riders are done in the course they use the ropes to stop them from traveling father down stream? and get to shore quick so they can do the course again?  we did the same kind of thing when floating down the Similkameen River but we didnt attempt to go through the treacherous stretch of white water...
