Shimano Baitcast
« on: March 13, 2011, 05:59:36 PM »

Question....

I have been using a Abu Garcia C4 6600 for Salmon and I LOVE IT. I just go a Shimano Cardiff 300a for my birthday that will be used for Steelehead and basic lake trolling. Could this reel stand up to anything bigger or should I just stick with my 6600 for that? Just curious...

Depending on where you fish, the Cardiff 300A should do any salmon job in the LML except the Fraser.
I wouldn't fish the Fraser with anything smaller than Abu 6000 series or Shimano 400.
The Shimano 300 series, like the Abu 5000 series, is a little under-gunned for the big river.

In addition, Shimano and its 150 parts is more susceptible to the Fraser silt than Abu and its under 80 parts, so keep the Abu for tough Fraser fishing and enjoy the smoothness of Shimano for everything else.  ;)

I currently have a cardif, great levelwind i use it for steelhead and all the salmon species. But am becoming a pin man  ::)
i disagree about the fraser tho, i used mine for coho, chum and coho on the fraser and it was fine but i wudnt use it for the fraser springs.
on the chilliwack river i have landed 30+ pound springs and 15+ pound steelies without any problems  :)
mines rigged with 12 lb maxima line.
all around it looks good and imo casts better then the calcutta.

The Fraser silt will eventually catch up to a reel if not properly maintained. For instance, when pink fishing I will toss some small croc spoons during an afternoon of fishing. After the day the spoons look like they have been put through a sandblaster as the finish is severely pitted on the spoon. That is how silty the waters of the Fraser are.  If you don't mind tearing down your reels and having them cleaned and maintained regularly then sure they can be used on the Fraser. However, I agree if you just want a beater/workhorse reel for the Fraser use an inexpensive reel like the Abu Garcia.

Makes me wonder why people take pictures of their fish with their reels in the water

and another thing about the cardif is they scratch prety easy, and mine has something loose inside it from the frasers mud and sand, so like suggedgested clean in it with clean water after every use.
