I had a great time fishing the Vedder today and as I'm interested in purchasing a centerpin rod and reel, couldn't help but notice the amount CP's out there. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Here is what I'm thinking so far:

Rod - SAGE 3113 M either in a blank or ready to fish

Reel - Milner Talisman or Islander Searun II (if I can find one)

There are so many rods and reels to choose from so I'm sure there will be a lot of opinions. I'm a fan of Sage but hear Lamiglas make a nice CP rod too.

you also wouldnt wanna be spending that much dough yet on a centerpin setup unless you have used one before (friends, relations, etc. )  as you may not like it.

If you know a CP is something you're going to stick with and can afford those names then yes awesome setup.  You'll never be unhappy with the perfomance of a sage or islander, though you might suffer a bit from the sticker cost if you buy it retail. If you're unsure, then get something cheaper to start- worst case it can act as your backup if you ever need to send your go-to rod out for repairs.
Casting a CP is what might discourage you, but if you've already tried it, then not too much else to worry about.

I went and played with the new Islander at my local tackle shop and saw that both the reels I spun had a wobble. 

I have an Islander steelheader and a Milner Kingfisher (bushing).  I love both yet I think I have a soft spot for the Islander cause it was my first pin and its awesome.

As for the rods I have a 3113 M and Gloomis pin rod.  I like both equally. 

Faster action on the GLoomis.

Wow....for a first centerpin outfit you sure are throwing out some big names!

You probably won't want a blank if you want to fish with it soon unless you build your own. Best to buy a factory built one or second hand. Sage is not the only CP rod out there and just to let you know, Sage has now stopped making gear rods if you haven't already heard.

M. Talisman($800plus), Searun($460-$500plus)....May I suggest the Islander IS as your first reel! If you are the type of person that puts their rod and reels down on the ground for any number of reasons I personally wouldn't recommend a Talisman.


PS  Just because you've heard of these names or brands doesn't mean they are the best or work better than others, it's all about personal preference and what you feel comfortable with.



 

couldn't agree more.. in the end, it all comes down to bait, a hook, and cheap leader line. and of course, whether or not there are fish there    doesn't matter what kind of gear u use if there aint no fish to catch 

Justin u played wit the searun at berry's right? fyi, that one is prolly a blem. come into the store when i'm there one day and u'll see a perfect searun - spins for over 2 minutes out of the box!

I fish a 3113m with islander IS 'heavy" setup,but i love it,talisman is a extremliy heavy reel you might wanna consider that,much heavier than any islander, if i can remember right almost double the weight.
I suggest go easy with your first setup,buy facoiry made,maybe  down the road after you fish a few different rods,than maybe consider building your own,after you see what you like,unless you got lots of dough and love fishing gear than go ahead and buy whatever you like lol.

ribolovac02, it all depends on what size Talisman. I have a 4" matched up with a 3106LB and I find it lighter than Islander/3113M or Kingfisher(4.375")/3113M.

Yes, you are right ,especially with the narrow spool, it even balance out really good with the 3113m too.   Nothing wrong with the weight of the reels, is the way you cast

Thanks for all the information. I went with a Kingfisher and am having a 3113 blank built out. In the meantime I'm using a Trophy and I tried it out today on The Vedder. Brrrrrrr that wind was killer.

hey Kelso did you go with an older brown blank 3113 or the newer ones?

You could not go wrong with Sage 3113 rods or Milner CP reel. I really like my  Custom build CP Brown Sage 3113MB and LB. I also have a Custom build CP Brown Sage 4120B for fishing Big T. or out salt chuck.
