Chilliwack River, February 25th 2011
« on: February 25, 2011, 01:55:23 PM »

I decided to work late yesterday and take today off. Work has a way of getting in the way of time fishing but I was not going to let it today. I picked up another Islander pin yesterday from a member on the board and was eager to hit the water with it. It was right at home on the Sage 2106lb i picked up last year while my 3113m was out for warranty.

I decided to sleep in and wake up with the kids rather than hit the river at first light. It was minus 10 when i hopped in my truck this morning here in Chilliwack, dropped my daughter off at school and headed to the river hoping to find a place out of the wind.

Was going to use bait but decided on artificials as it was quite cold and didn't feel like letting my hands get colder. Hiked into a favorite spot with no one around and slowly worked through a very nice piece of water. River has sure been dropping and gin clear throughout the river. Nothing on the first pass, so I started back from the top with a slightly different presentation. Worked all of the way back down and was making a couple last casts in the tailout before relocating and sure enough float down, fish on.

Put up a very good scrap, making a couple good runs, came out of the water once and almost wrapped itself around a boulder. My boots had a bunch of snow and ice built up on the bottoms and half way during the fight I slipped on a rock ended up playing the fish from my knees in a couple feet of water for a few seconds until i could get back up lol. When I got it to the shallows, I could see it was a 7lb hatchery buck. My hands were pretty cold and I had some stuff to pick up as its my Dad's birthday today so I decided to bonk it and call it a day early.

All in all, a great way to spend a crisp sunny friday morning away from work, and break in a new reel.

Just because you have a pin rod doesnt mean you know how to fish it.....

One look out there and I went home and watched paint dry, curling. ;D ;D ;D

PS glad you got one, you deserved it, braving the elements as they were.

Yeah it was definitely clear and VERY cold friday, but it payed off. Didn't have to fish too long to find a fish.

I thought it would probably be my last report for february as I didn't think I would have time to make it back to the river. Things changed, and I was out and about in the snow this morning on my way back to the river. There were a few people out but it looked like the snow scared away a lot of people this morning.

I headed back to the same area I pulled a fish from Friday. Was nice and quiet with nobody around and the snow falling. There is something about steelheading in the snow that just feels right. I began working slowly through the run. Little while later, fish on! Another good battle produced a 7-8ish lb wild buck, showing his spawning colors. I popped the hook and away he went. Awesome I thought, back to back fish days. A couple sips of coffee and I was back fishing. About ten minutes later, fish on again! Another battle brings a wild doe to hand of 10-11ish lbs, this one chrome as can possibly be. In knee deep water I grasped her by the tail, popped the hook, put my rod down and was just turning my camera on when she wiggled free and took off. No pictures today but no worries either, the memory remains of a great morning.

I fished for a couple hours after, there and another area, but that was it for me. A couple great back to back times on the river. Definitely broke the new reel in right this weekend. Hope the week goes fast so I can get back out there.
