looking for a baitcasting setup
« on: August 03, 2011, 08:53:58 AM »

hi

I am looking for a baitcasting setup, I used to fish with spin casting rods and now i move on a bit.
I went to the fish store and it seems like baitcasting are much more expensive than spin casting,
the cheapest combo was like $250, wiht a fenwick hmx and a Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C3 reel.

should I take it or there's a better combo I should look for under that price range?

Thanks for any info.

The $250 Fenwick/Abu Garcia combo is a pretty reasonable offer but it's not the cheapest entry-level setup that you can get. Look into Shimano Convergence or some of Trophy XL models. For fishing reel, I personally prefer to go with a Shimano reel than Abu Garcia.

What's more important, is to figure out what species you want to target and get the appropriate combination of rod and reel to suit your type of fishing.

Thanks Rodney

I am targeting for coho in capilano,  springs in vedder river, springs in upper part of fraser (near hope), sockeye in any river (depends on when and where they will be opened.)
and pinks in any rivers or sea shore.

I want to put 50lb braid line on it but I just heard one of the staff in the fish shop said get a 30lb mono line instead of braid coz braid line could easily damage your baitcasting reel since they are not stretchable

Those are pretty different species.  To play it safe and save some cash in the long run, I would say you should look to the heavier end of the spectrum - find a rod that would have no problems with springs and then use it to chase the smaller species - the gear that I would use in the Cap for coho is very different than the one I pull out of the truck for springs.  Rod prefers the Shimano reels, and they're great, but I've had good experiences with Abu reels.  A C3 is the standard offering for good reason.  If you wish to check out the Shimano stuff, look at pairing a Technium or Convergence rod, with the Technium being a little more pricey.  The Convergence also has a section of exposed blank next to the trigger of the reel seat, so that you can "feel" the blank.  I haven't decided whether this is cool or corny yet, but you'll need to take a look at it.  For a shimano reel, look around and you could locate a cardiff for under $100.  A friend got a new in box Cardiff for $75 off Amazon.

Keep in mind that if you're getting a C3 or a similar model, which has a recommended line rating of less than 20lb test, spooling With 30, 50lb main line will wear it out fast. Personally I put 12lb test main line on my reel, but i Like to catch minnows. ;)
