May 2011's Tofino fishing report
« on: May 24, 2011, 11:39:47 AM »

Here at Tofino we are well into the start of the fishing season and things are beginnings to ramp up in a big way! The fishing outlook for this summer is very favorable (similar to last year) so we are excited about that; it really was a great year in 2010. :)

The halibut fishery has started, with numerous stories from the commercial and sport fishers of the continued abundance of this highly sought after flat fish. Jeff at Fishing Tofino has had amazing success with; spreader bar, a large squid attractor on the weight side and a large herring on the hook side. This drives the halibut crazy. The theory is the Halibut thinks the squid is going after the herring and the halibut tries to get it first.

Tofino's West Coast mid-May salmon fishing is rated good to excellent. The early runs heading to the Fraser & Columbia Rivers are producing some high volumes of chinook. With the chinooks termed as "feisty" and putting up some great runs. Fishing off Portland and Cleland, 7 nautical miles from Tofino on the offshore banks produced a 39lb chinook this week. Normal days are seeing every angler catching their limits, weather permitting.

Mix up those set ups with a little variation. Successful set-ups are UV Rays Davis anchovy teasers, 4 inch coyote spoons, army trucks with red chrome or purple gold flashers at 120 to 140 feet.

It sure does look like Tofino is shaping up for a repeat of the incredible 2010 summer where you caught your daily limits and then some. Stand by for the June Tofino fishing report with videos. Keep those lines tight!
