Cultus Lake, May 24th 2011
« on: May 24, 2011, 10:44:41 PM »

I bought a new to me boat last year, and figured since I hadn't put it in water yet I should do it before the summer hits.  Me the wife and the two boys got to the lake at around 3:00P.M.  rowed around for a while and then fired up the motor.  I think it had some stale gas in it, because it took about 20 minutes to get it going.  Once I had it running we started to drive around the lake and ended up talking to another fisherman who had a couple of rods out but said he had no luck for the day.  We decided to start fishing, and within about ten minutes, bang fish on.  As soon as I set the hook, it jumped about two feet out of the water.  Didn't fight much more untill it seen me reaching for it, thats when it sent a tailful of water at my oldest son.  I am not sure what kind of fish it was, but it was about 16" long.  I  removed the hook and let it go, and continued to fish and put around the lake for about another two and a half hours.  The wife finally statrted getting bored of watching me fish, so I told her 5 more casts.  Third cast in bang another hit.  I set the hook, started reeling and pop out it came.  All in all not a bad little day at the lake.  Oh ya I forgot about my 5 year old getting a knot in his spiderman fishing rod, and before I could fix it for him, he dropped it over the edge.  I think his next fishing rod is going to be tethered to the boat.

Hard to tell from that picture, but looks like you caught a cuttie by the shape of the mouth and the fact that it jumped. Nice time of the year to get out on cultus, nice weather but not too many boats yet.

I was thinking it looked like a cutthroat after looking at the pics in the synopsis.  And yes, the weather was awesome and there was a period of about an hour when the only boat on the water was us.

Nice. :) It could have been a bull trout too, hard to tell without seeing the body colours.

Where do you launch the boat?

I wasn't sure where to launch it, so me and the wife just caried it from the parking lot at the day use area.  After getting out on the lake we realized that there was a public launch about half a kilometer down the road.

Its a beagle, and the boat is 12 feet.  lots of room for me the wife, two kids and a dog.
